SUNY Cortland Athletes Honored at 2018 C-Club Athletics Award Ceremony

The 2018 SUNY Cortland C-Club Athletic Awards Ceremony, held April 30 at the College's Brown Auditorium in Old Main, honored the top student-athletes from among the 600-plus who competed on Cortland's 25 men's and women's intercollegiate teams during the past academic year.

The SUNY Cortland C-Club Male Senior Athlete of the Year Award was presented to football quarterback Steven Ferreira (West Sayville/Sayville) and the C-Club Female Senior Athlete of the Year Award was presented to field hockey back Meg Redmond (Accord/Rondout Valley). The awards are sponsored by the C-Club and were voted upon by Cortland athletic administrators.

Ferreira completed 191-of-327 passes (58 percent)for 2,567 yards and 24 touchdowns and ran for 305 yards and three scores in his senior season. A two-time All-Empire 8 selection and a 2015 all-region honoree, Ferreira set school career records for passing yardage (6,271), completions (225) and total offense (6,917 yards).

Redmond was a third team All-American after recorded a team-high six defensive saves and notching one goal and one assist. She helped Cortland's defense allow less than a goal per game as the Red Dragons won the SUNYAC title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament.
 
Other finalists for Male Senior Athlete of the Year were: basketball guard James Morales (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane); lacrosse attack Devin Phelps (Chittenango); baseball catcher Justin Teague (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse); track and field high jumper Nick Vachon (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell); and ice hockey goalie Drew Weigman (Annapolis, MD/DeMatha Catholic).
 
Other Female Senior Athlete of the Year finalists were: track and field thrower Harley Buczkowski (Holland Patent); gymnast Bailey Gildemeyer (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse); basketball guard Kerry McHugh (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury); and softball shortstop Andrea Schoonmaker (Marlboro).
 
For the third year, the College recognized the C-Club Male and Female Freshman Athletes of the Year. The men's winner was baseball outfielder Antonio Pragana (Hopewell Junction/John Jay), who so far this spring is batting .384 with nine steals and 29 runs scored in 35 games, 29 as a starter. The women's winner was gymnast Emma Schulz (Poughquag/Arlington), who earned All-America honors on balance beam with a tie for third place at the NCGA Championships and who holds a share of the school record (9.825) on the event.
 
The Freshman of the Year awards were limited to student-athletes in their first year of collegiate athletic eligibility. The other men's finalists were ice hockey forward Michael Faliero (West Seneca/Bishop Timon St. Jude), soccer midfielder Jake Kaufman (Poughkeepsie/Spackenkill) and track and field multi-event athlete Easton Reagan (Schenectady/Schalmont). The other women's finalists were lacrosse goalie Annie Casey (Bay Shore), swimmer Heidi Simpfenderfer (Poughkeepsie/Roy C. Ketcham), and soccer midfielder Erin Valente (Latham/Shaker).
 
Teague received the Carl "Chugger" Davis Award, which is given to a senior male athlete for strong leadership skills and athletic achievement. Teague has been a four-year starter for the Red Dragons, including his freshman year when Cortland won the national title, and he has earned all-region and All-SUNYAC honors twice. Davis was Cortland's head football coach from 1932 to 1962 and also coached baseball, basketball and golf.
 
Women's lacrosse defender Carli Clementi (Huntington/Harborfields) received the M. Louise Moseley Award, which goes to a senior female athlete who has demonstrated both strong leadership skills and athletic achievement. A four-year letterwinner, Clementi has started all 17 games, to date, for the 13-4 Red Dragons and has three goals, 37 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers. Moseley was Cortland's Director of Women's Athletics from 1966-78. A pioneer for women's athletics, she played an integral role in the start of women's intercollegiate athletics at Cortland in the late 1960s.
 
Women's lacrosse defender Sydney Oshinsky (Oceanside) earned the Whitney T. Corey '43 Award, which is presented to the senior female student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average. Oshinsky is a therapeutic recreation major with a 3.84 overall GPA prior to the spring semester. Corey coached men's basketball at Cortland in the 1950s and early 1960s and also served as the school's vice president for academic affairs. The main gymnasium in Cortland's Park Center bears his name.
 
Men's soccer defender Drew DeJohn (Spencerport) won the Robert J. Weber Award as the senior male student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average. DeJohn is an exercise science major with a 3.74 overall GPA prior to the spring semester. Weber was Cortland's director of athletics for 12 years and the Chairman of the Men's Physical Education department for 15 years. He worked at Cortland from 1952-85.
 
Ayana Flores won the Peter J. Cahill '66 Award. The award, named for Cortland's former swimming and diving and women's tennis head coach, is presented to either a current student-athlete or non-athlete student for involvement in activities outside of sports and/or contributions to the Athletics Department. A sport management major from Birdsboro, Pa., Flores served as the wrestling team manager for four seasons, assisting with the program's media, filming, photography, statistics and recruiting.
 
For the first time this year, Cortland Athletics gave out Unsung Hero Awards to recognize accomplishments of student-athletes who led their teams to success in ways that cannot always be measured in statistical categories and who exemplify the characteristics of a true leader - excelling in the classroom, and demonstrating humility, work ethic and integrity at all times in both practice and competition. The winners were senior baseball third baseman Matt Michalski (Buffalo/St. Francis) and senior women's basketball guard Taylor Miller (Freeport). Michalski has been a member of Cortland's baseball team for five years (his 2016 season was cut short due to injury) and was a key contributor to the team's 2015 national championship season as well as NCAA appearances in his other seasons. Miller played three seasons at Cortland and led the Red Dragons in steals and assists this past winter. Both Michalski and Miller are team captains.
 
The 22nd annual C-Club Coach of the Year Award was presented to softball head coach Julie Lenhart. Last season, following the banquet, Lenhart led Cortland to a SUNYAC title and an NCAA regional crown before losing in the NCAA super regionals to tie for ninth nationally. The season, she became the sixth coach in NCAA Division III history to reach 900 career wins. Lenhart is currently 791-311-2 in 24 seasons at Cortland, in addition to 120-77 in five years at Wisconsin-Platteville from 1990-94.
 
Courtney Wormuth was chosen as the Fraser Stokes Award winners for her dedication and service to Cortland Athletics. Wormuth started at Cortland as Assistant Director of Athletics for Event Management, Marketing and Promotions in the 2011-12 school year. The Johnstown, N.Y., native moved to her current areas of compliance and scheduling in 2012, and was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 2014. Wormuth is a 2003 graduate of North Carolina Wesleyan College.
 
The Judson and Elise Taylor Team GPA Awards, named after the former SUNY Cortland president and his wife, were presented to the men's and women's athletic teams with the highest cumulative grade point averages. The men's ice hockey team, with a cumulative GPA of 3.09, won the men's award. The women's award was won by the women's gymnastics team for the fourth time in the last five years with a cumulative GPA of 3.34.
 
The "Record Setting Performance" award was presented to Ferreira, who set football school records for career passing yards (6,271), completions (456), touchdown passes (57), total offense (6,917 yards) and 300-yard passing games (8). He also set school single-season records in 2015 with 3,127 passing yards, 225 completions, 3,327 total offensive yards and a 169.1 passing efficiency rating.
 
Each year, the Cortland head coaches select a Red Letter Award winner in their respective sports.  The Red Letter may be given for outstanding athletic skills, team leadership, personal development as a player, or for any combination of reasons.  The 2017-18 Red Letter Award winners, by sport, are as follows:
