NORTHAMPTON, MA. – Five different players scored goals as the nationally 16th-ranked Cortland field hockey team opened its season with a 5-0 victory against Plymouth St. in the opening day of play at the Smith College Caryl Newhof Tournament. The Red Dragons, who captured last year's tournament title. advanced to face host school Smith College in the championship game Sunday at 1 p.m.

Jess Gibaldi (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) led Cortland with a goal and an assist. Senior
Dani Barto (Nichols/Tioga Central) scored the game-winning goal, while junior
Molly Quinlan (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius), sophomore
Valerie Brillaud (Nesonset/Smithtown East) and freshman
Annie Kase (Rochester/Brighton) each tallied her first goal as a Red Dragon. Juniors
Amanda Glaser (Huntington/Walt Whitman) and
Amanda D'Amico (Smithtown/Smithtown West) recorded one assist apiece.
Senior goalie
Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) made three saves in posting the shutout for the Red Dragons. Goalie Jessica Distler turned aside 16 shots for the Panthers in 52:46 before giving way to Haieley Gil, who stopped three shots over the final 17:14.
Barto scored the lone goal of the first half on an unassisted effort at 12:41. Cortland then pulled away after intermission as Quinlan scored just 3:11 into the second half before Gibaldi scored at 52:46, followed by goals from Brillaud at 55:29 and Kase at 56:00. Kylie Ham recorded two defensive saves.
