CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland finished 2-2 at its own Red Dragon Classic women's volleyball tournament after splitting two matches during Saturday's competition. Cortland opened the day with a 26-24, 25-20, 25-13 sweep of Rowan University, but Nazareth overcame an early deficit to beat the Red Dragons, 23-25, 25-16, 25-14, 25-18 to close out the tournament.
Rochester and Nazareth each finished the tournament with 4-0 records. Rochester was declared the tournament champion by virtue of playing only 14 sets during its four matches compared to Nazareth's 15 sets. Keene State and Fredonia each finished 3-1, while Cortland, Rowan, Stockton and Oneonta were each 2-2. Wells and Lebanon Valley were both 1-3 and Houghton and D'Youville each finished 0-4.
Junior setter
Gabby Amelio (Pine Bush) was named to the all-tournament team for the second straight year. She finished the tournament with 113 assists (7.1 per set) and 50 digs (3.1 per set). She registered 25 assists and six digs versus Rowan and 18 assists and nine digs against Nazareth.
Kiersten Cote (East Rockaway/Kellenberg Memorial) led Cortland in the Rowan match with 11 kills.
Nadia Moore (Durham, NC/Durham School of the Arts) and
Bridgette Moran (Massapequa Park/St. John the Baptist) finished with eight kills each, and
Camryn Anderson (Bronx/Cardinal Spellman) added six kills with just one error in nine attempts for a .556 attack percentage.
Gabby Fernandes (Islip) led the Red Dragons with 16 digs and
Emilee Chiavetta (Angola/Immaculata Academy) served four aces. Moran paced the team with four blocks, followed by
Maya Owens (Nyack) with three.
Moore led Cortland in the Nazareth match with eight kills and added eight digs. Moran and
Taylor Konzen (Bohemia/Connetquot) finished with seven kills each, and Amelio and Chiavetta shared the team lead with nine digs apiece. Moran added a team-high three blocks, all solo.
Cortland heads to Pennsylvania for its next seven matches over a two-week span. The Red Dragons will play four times at the Lycoming Invitational next Friday and Saturday, followed by a dual match at Scranton Sept. 11 and two matches in a tri-match at Muhlenberg Sept. 15.
