Red Dragons Hold Off Hobart, 1-0

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Junior Jake Keller (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) scored his third goal of the season with 14 minutes, 42 seconds remaining in regulation as the nationally 15th-ranked Cortland men's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory versus Hobart Tuesday night in a non-conference match. The Red Dragons improved to 5-0-2 with the win, and the Statesmen fell to 1-4-1.

Junior Ivan Dam (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) assisted on Keller's goal. Junior goalie Sean Kelly (Coram/Newfield) turned aside six shots in posting his fourth shutout of the season for the Red Dragons. Senior goalie Alec Kaminer (Paramus, NJ) registered two saves for Hobart.

The Statesmen carried much of the play in the opening 45 minutes of action, outshooting the Red Dragons, 9-3. Hobart created the best scoring opportunity in the 39th minute when Cortland sent an errant pass across the field that sprung Hobart junior Tristan Cornell Roberts on a breakaway. Kelly charged off his line and smothered Cornell Roberts' shot to keep it scoreless.

Cortland's first chance of the game came in the 56th minute when Keller struck a one-time shot from 15 yards that Kaminer saved. The Statesmen followed with a pair of looks. In the 62nd minute, senior Derrick Ahcheampong (Needham, MA/Noble and Greenough) took a shot off a loose ball in close to the Cortland goal, but Kelly made a save near the left post and the ball went over the end line. In the 75th minute, Cornell Roberts had an open chance from the left side of the box that Kelly denied.

Less than a minute later, Dam possessed the ball on the left side, carried deep toward the end line and sent a cross into the box. Keller ran onto the pass and one-timed a hard shot past Kaminer for his third game-winning goal of the season. Hobart pressed for the tying goal, generating an opportunity with nine minutes remaining. Sophomore Jack Fell (Concord, MA/Concord Carlisle) intended to deliver a cross from the right side. The ball deflected off a Cortland defender and headed for the upper right corner where Kelly punched the shot away. The Statesmen continued to pressure, but the Red Dragons held them off to earn the win.
