#20 Red Dragons Fall to Ithaca, 4-3

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Ithaca field hockey team scored four goals on just six shots and held off nationally 20th-ranked Cortland late to earn a 4-3 victory in non-conference action Wednesday night at the Stadium Complex.

Senior Jessica Welsh (Hamilton), junior Hannah Burchell (Whitney Point) and sophomore Valerie Brillaud (Nesconset/Smithtown East) each tallied a goal for the Red Dragons (4-3). Senior Jess Gibaldi (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) and freshman Alanie Genter (Saratoga Springs) recorded one assist apiece.

Junior Kendall Keil (Camden) led the Bombers (6-1) with a pair of goals, including the game-winner late in the first half. Senior Maria McGloin (Dover, DE/Saint Thomas More) registered a goal and two assists, sophomore Kristen Rafferty (Andover, NJ/Lenape Valley Regional) scored a goal and senior Meg Dowd (Camden, ME/Camden Hills Regional) collected two assists. Junior goalie Samantha Lenker (Camp Hill, PA/Cedar Cliff) made three saves.

McGloin gave the Bombers a 1-0 lead just 1:12 into the game when she beat Reinoehl to a ball out front and knocked a shot into the open goal. Welsh tied the game at 15:56 after she took a pass off a corner, dribbled around two defenders and sent a shot through Lenker's pads. Cortland took a 2-1 lead one minute later on Burchell's shot through traffic from eight yards out, but Ithaca closed the half with a pair of scores for a 3-2 lead at the break. Rafferty tied the game with a one-time shot inside the post at 19:51, and Keil notched her first of the night with an open shot at the right post at 30:33.

The Bombers made it a 4-2 game at 61:15 on Keil's second goal, a redirection off a deflection after a penalty corner. Cortland pulled to within 4-3 with 2:56 remaining in regulation as Brillaud deflected a cross from Genter past Lenker. Cortland pressed for the equalizer as time winded down but could not create a quality scoring chance as Ithaca held on for the 4-3 win.
