Cortland Blanks Herons, 4-0, in Non-Conference Action

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Four different players scored goals as the nationally 20th-ranked Cortland field hockey team defeated non-conference foe William Smith, 4-0, Saturday afternoon at the Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons improved to 5-3 with the win, while the Herons fell to 3-5.

Senior Jess Gibaldi (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) and freshman Alanie Genter (Saratoga Springs) paced the Cortland with one goal and one assist each, with Genter's score being the first of her career. Junior Hannah Burchell (Whitney Point) and sophomore Brynn Crocker (Harpursville) tallied one goal apiece, and junior Molly Quinlan (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) recorded an assist.

Senior goalie Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) made two saves for Cortland in posting the shutout. Sophomore Alexandra DeVito (Rumson, NJ/Rumson Fair Haven) started in goal for William Smith, allowing two goals in 19:07. Freshman Anna McCarthy (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough) played the final 50:53, turning aside five shots.

Gibaldi gave Cortland a 1-0 lead at the 15:22 mark with her sixth goal of the season, scoring right in front off a cross from Quinlan. Burchell made it a 2-0 game with her sixth goal of the season less than four minutes later, blasting a straight-on shot from just inside the circle on a penalty corner insertion from Genter. The Red Dragons took a 3-0 lead into the half on Genter's first career goal, scoring on a rebound in front after a shot by Gibaldi was blocked.

Crocker completed the scoring just 12 seconds into the second half when she deflected a pass from Gibaldi inside of the right post for her second goal of the season. The Herons had two chances to spoil the shutout bid, but Reinoehl denied shots by senior Fallon Adair (Bristol, NH/Proctor Academy) and sophomore Sophie Craig (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius).
