CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally 12th-ranked Rochester field hockey team broke open a close game at the half with three unanswered goals in defeating 16th-ranked Cortland, 4-1, Wednesday night in non-conference action at the Stadium Complex. The Yellowjackets improved to 2-0 with the win, while the Red Dragons dropped to 2-1.

Junior Hannah Burchell (Whitney Point) scored Cortland's goal with freshman Alanie Genter (Saratoga Springs) assisting on the play. Senior goalie Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) made five saves.

Junior Colleen Maillie (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) led Rochester with a goal and an assist. Senior Nancy Bansbach (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius), junior Maya Haigis (Acton, MA/Acton Boxborough) and freshman Nikki Mercer (Ventura, CA/Foothill Technology) tallied one goal apiece, and seniors Lauren Sharpe (Kitchener, ON/Cameron Heights) and Jennifer Lee (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon) and junior Amanda Guido (Queensbury) chipped in with one assist each.

Junior goalie Kate Kujawa (Elm Grove, WI/Divine Savoir Holy Angels) turned aside nine shots for the Yellowjackets. Senior Courtney Dunham (Lisle/Whitney Point) recorded two defensive saves, and senior Kate Tiffany (Moorestown, NJ) contributed one defensive save.

Maillie gave Rochester the lead 27:19 into the game with a long blast from the right side through a screen. Haigis made it a 2-0 game 6:53 into the second half when she took a feed from Maillie on a penalty corner and ripped a long shot inside the left post. 

Bansbach put the Yellowjackets ahead, 3-0, at the 47:07 mark, lifting a shot from a sharp angle on the right side over Reinoehl and inside the left post. The lead grew to 4-0 at 57:12 on Mercer's shot through the pads off a cross from the right. Burchell put the Red Dragons on the scoreboard at 62:33, knocking a shot from just inside the circle on a penalty corner that deflected off a defender's stick and inside the right post. Cortland nearly added another goal right before the buzzer, but Burchell was denied by Tiffany's defensive save to keep it a 4-1 final.
