Cortland C-Club Hall of Fame to Induct Eight New Members Oct. 6

Eight new members will be inducted into the SUNY Cortland C-Club Hall of Fame during its 50th annual ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 6.
 
The 2018 honorees are:
 
* Robert Brown '49 (posthumous), men's soccer, baseball
 
* Murray Banks '70 M '75, men's cross country, men's indoor and outdoor track and field, men's swimming and diving
 
* Peter Graham '74, men's lacrosse, football
 
* Jud Smith '76, men's lacrosse
 
* Dan Revai '79, baseball, men's ice hockey
 
* Sue Behme '93, women's soccer, women's lacrosse

* Chuck Winters (honorary), men's lacrosse head coach (1973-83)

* and Cynthia Wetmore (honorary), field hockey head coach (1998-2015), women's lacrosse head coach (1998-2007)


In addition to Saturday night's official ceremony, the inductees will be introduced at halftime of the Cortland-Morrisville St. football game earlier that afternoon.

Established in 1969, the C-Club Hall of Fame recognizes Cortland alumni who competed as athletes at the College and who have since distinguished themselves in their professions and within their communities. Honorary members are recognized for their long and significant contributions to SUNY Cortland athletics. New C-Club members have been added annually and this year's ceremony will bring the Hall of Fame roster to 263 alumni and 30 honorary members.
 
Nominations for next year's C-Club Hall of Fame voting will be accepted until January 15, 2019. The nomination form is available online at: http://www.cortlandreddragons.com/nominations. A person must be nominated in order to be considered for induction into the Hall of Fame.
 
A detailed look at this year's inductees follows.
 
Robert Brown '49
(posthumous)
 
Robert Brown was a two-time soccer All-American as well as a baseball standout at Cortland who enjoyed a highly successful 33-year coaching and teaching career, including 31 years at Pine Valley Central School.
 
* A South Dayton, N.Y., native, he initially enrolled at Cortland State Teachers College in 1942. He was drafted into the Combat Engineers in the U.S. Army in March 1943 and was in the Army Specialist Training Program at the University of Santa Clara, where he earned college credit in civil engineering. Was sent to England as a combat engineer and later served in France, Holland and Germany to finish his tour of duty.
 
* Discharged from military service in March 1946. Re-enrolled at Cortland in the fall of 1946 and earned a bachelor's degree in physical education. Also earned a master's degree from Alfred University in 1951.
 
* Two-time soccer All-American at Cortland (first team in 1948, second team in 1947). Baseball infielder and relief pitcher in 1947 and 1948. Played freshman basketball in 1942.
 
* Signed professional baseball contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization in the summer of 1948. Attended spring training for two weeks in March 1948 and played in 59 games with the Nashua Dodgers minor league team in 1949 (along with Cortland C-Club Hall of Famer Marion Fricano '49). Also played 91 games for the Wellsville Rockets in the Pony League in 1951.
 
* Taught physical education and coached in Whitesville for two years from 1950-52 and began a 31-year teaching and coaching career at Pine Valley Central School (formerly South Dayton High) in 1952. Retired from teaching and coaching in June 1984, was inducted into the Chautauqua Hall of Fame in 1986, and inducted into the Grape Belt Sports Hall of Fame and the Pine Valley Wall of Fame in 2005.
 
* Coached football, basketball and baseball, taught and held the positions of athletic director and assistant principal at Pine Valley during his 31 years there. Led football team to several league championships, including an undefeated team in 1966 that produced two professional players, and many sectional baseball titles.
 
* Football field at Pine Valley was named Robert C. Brown Field in 1986.
 
* Director of Summer Swim Program at Pine Valley Central School, coordinator of the South Dayton Food Pantry and served on the South Dayton Village Board, Town of Dayton Board, and the South Dayton Free Methodist Church Board of Trustees.
 
* Passed away on November 27, 2011 at age 87.

Murray Banks '70, M '75
Crested Butte, Colorado
 
Murray Banks was a standout distance runner for the Red Dragons who was a teacher and coach in both Cortland and Vermont and has been a long-time professional speaker and trainer.
 
* A Cortland native and Cortland High School alumnus who attended Auburn Community College before transferring to SUNY Cortland. Earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Cortland in 1970 and a Master of Science in Physical Education in 1975.
 
* Ran on the cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field teams for two seasons from 1967-69 and competed on the swim team in 1969.
 
* Cross country team captain, SUNYAC champion, NCAA qualifier and Red Letter Award winner in 1968. Helped the Red Dragons win two SUNYAC team titles.
 
* Indoor track captain and New York State Collegiate Track and Field Association (NYSCTFA) 2-mile champion in 1969. Outdoor track SUNYAC 2-mile champion in 1969.
 
* Carl "Chugger" Davis Senior Scholar/Athlete Award winner, presented to the top male senior athlete among all sports at Cortland, in 1969.
 
* Physical education teacher and coach in the Cortland City School District from 1970-78. Built Cortland High's varsity boys' cross country team from four runners in 1971 into a league and sectional champion with 30-plus runners. Started the first Cortland High girls' cross country squad. Organized and directed the first-ever New York State High School Federation Cross Country Championship.
 
* Taught and coached in the Bethel (Vt.) School District from 1978-84. Created an elective physical education program for high school students with a focus on wellness and lifetime fitness, and created special programs for elementary students with perceptual motor difficulties.
 
* Earned the New York State Coaches Association Honor Award in 1978, the Vermont American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) Teacher of the Year Award in 1982, and the Eastern District Association (EDA)/AAHPERD Outstanding Educator Award in 1983.
 
* Professional speaker and trainer since 1984 for school district professional development, education leadership conferences, corporate training and motivational conference keynotes throughout the United States and Canada.
 
* Accomplished tri-athlete who won four Masters National Championships and was twice among the top finishers in the Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii. Also a many-time national champion and three-time masters world champion in cross country skiing.
 
* In 1989 helped build the Mansfield Nordic Club in Vermont into a national powerhouse encompassing more than 200 skiers that has produced numerous medalists at New England, national and world championships at the youth, junior and masters levels.

Peter Graham '74
Horseheads, New York
 
Peter Graham was a two-time All-America men's lacrosse goalie who helped Cortland advance to the 1972 NCAA Division I semifinals and win the 1973 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) College Division national title.
 
* A Corning native who earned a Bachelor of Science in Recreation Education from Cortland in 1974.
 
* Three-year men's lacrosse starting goalie from 1972-74 and two-year football starting middle linebacker in 1972 and 1973 after attending Corning Community College for three semesters.
 
* Lacrosse first team All-American and team co-captain in 1974. Third team All-American in 1973. Team MVP in both of those seasons. Earned the 1974 Ensign C. Markland Kelly, Jr. Award as the nation's top goalie. Starting North goalie in the 1974 North-South Senior All-Star Game.
 
* Registered 203 saves in 1972 to help Cortland finish 14-2 and advance to the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Semifinals. Made 20 saves in Cortland's 10-9 overtime win at Navy in the quarterfinals and 12 saves versus Virginia at home in the national semifinals.
 
* Made a then-school record 209 saves in 1973, including 65 in four victories as Cortland won the USILA college division national title. Stopped 22 shots in a first-round win over Adelphi and 19 in a semifinal victory over Hobart.
 
* Made 197 saves as a senior in 1974, including 24 in a win over Maryland-Baltimore County in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals and a school single-game record 39 in a five overtime regular-season win at UMass (20 in overtime). Finished with 609 career saves (still second in school history).
 
* Intercepted two passes during his junior football season and returned an interception 41 yards for a touchdown versus Springfield as a senior.
 
* Voted as the 1974 Beta Sports King Award recipient by the Cortland student body for highest excellence in Athletics.
 
* Played professional lacrosse for the Toronto Tomahawks and the Boston Bolts in 1974-75 and was a semi-pro player in the Miller Hi-Life Lacrosse League from 1976-78.
 
* Highly decorated sales manager for the Glass Container Industry (1981-99), Frontier Communications (2000-08), Primus Telecommunications, Inc. (2008-09) and Time Warner (2009-17). Also received numerous awards as a sales representative for IBM Corp and ITEL Corporation.
 
* Coached youth baseball, basketball, football, soccer and softball in Tampa, Fla., Wall, N.J. and Horseheads from 1984-2009 and youth lacrosse coaching from 1996-2005. Also volunteered with Special Olympics in Tampa.
 
* Inducted into the Corning-Painted Post Hall of Fame for lacrosse in 1982.

Jud Smith '76
Prosper, Texas
 
Jud Smith was a four-year starter and three-time All-American for Cortland men's lacrosse squad that won two national titles, and he enjoyed a successful 30-year tenure with the global chemical producer Ashland, Inc.
 
* The Massapequa native earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Cortland in 1976 and a Master of Business Administration from Hofstra University in 1979.
 
* Four-year starter at attack for the men's lacrosse team from 1973-76. Team co-captain as a junior and senior.
 
* Three-time All-American - first team in 1975 and 1976 and second team in 1974. Selected to the North squad for the 1976 North-South Senior All-Star Game.
 
* Finished his career with 99 goals and 98 assists for 197 career points. Graduated as Cortland's career points leader.
 
* Helped team win two nationals titles. Registered 57 points (27 goals, 30 assists) in 1975 as Cortland finished 10-4, including three wins in the NCAA Division II playoffs. Recorded two goals and one assist versus Hobart in the national title game. Totaled 55 points (27 goals, 28 assists) in 1973 as the Red Dragons went 13-2 and won the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) College Division national crown. Finished with a combined 10 goals and seven assists in four playoff games.
 
* Member of 1974 squad that finished 8-3 and advanced to the NCAA Division II semifinals and the 1976 team that earned an NCAA Division II playoff berth before losing in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals.
 
* Voted as the 1976 Beta Sports King Award recipient by the Cortland student body for highest excellence in Athletics.
 
* Head coach of Cortland's junior varsity men's lacrosse team in 1977, followed by a stint as boys' lacrosse assistant coach at Garden City High School from 1978-79.
 
* Employee and executive of Ashland, Inc. - a global manufacturer and distributor of specialty chemicals - from 1979-2009. Served as a vice president/general manager from 2000-09 and business director from 1996-99, in addition to roles as a sales representative, district manager and director of sales. Received the corporation's highest honor, the Chairman's Award, in 2005, and earned multiple Salesman of the Year and District Manager of the Year awards.
 
* Founding Principal of the Friends of Cortland Lacrosse Endowed Fund in 2010 and a member of the Cortland College Foundation Board from 2009-15.
 
* Organizing Principal and competitor for the Cortland 60-Plus "Red Draginz" men's lacrosse alumni team at the 2017 Lake Placid Summer Classic.

Dan Revai '79
Plover, Wisconsin
 
Dan Revai was one of the best pitchers in Cortland baseball history in addition to playing one season of varsity ice hockey. He went on to a highly successful 34-year career with The Sentry Insurance Company in Wisconsin.
 
* The Massena native earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Cortland in 1979.
 
* Four-year baseball pitcher from 1975-79 and was a goalie on Cortland's first men's ice hockey varsity team as a freshman in 1975-76.
 
* Career pitching totals of 22 wins, 232 strikeouts, 38 appearances and 250 and a third innings pitched were most in school history at the time of his graduation. He still ranks second at Cortland in strikeouts and innings pitched and tied for seventh in wins. Struck out 16 batters versus Hartwick in 1977 - still tied for the second highest single-game total in school history, and the most ever by a Red Dragon in a 7-inning contest.
 
* All-SUNYAC and First Team All-Upstate New York selection in 1977 and 1979. Finished 10-2 with a 2.05 ERA (including an 8-0 mark in SUNYAC play) in 1979 and earned the baseball team's Red Letter Award. Member of three SUNYAC championship teams (1975-76, 1976-77, 1978-79).
 
* Held numerous senior leadership positions during his 34-year tenure with The Sentry Insurance Company. Started as a sales representative from 1979-83, sales manager from 1983-87 and sales executive/national accounts from 1987-94.
 
* Became Director of Sales/National Accounts at Sentry from 1994-2001 and was Vice President National Accounts from 2002-08 as well as from 2010 until his retirement in 2014. Helped lead Sentry's National Account business unit to a level where it attained more than $1 billion in annual premium and claims revenue through relationships with more than 500 national and large regional customers, up from $65 million and 85 accounts when he first entered the business unit.
 
* Board member of The Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin from 2010-12, helping connect donors, non-profit organizations, professional advisers, community leaders and other partners to inspire charitable giving in Central Wisconsin. Since 2015 has been a board member of the Stevens Point Area YMCA Foundation, which provides more than 4,500 scholarships annually to help children and families in need.
 
* In September 2017 was one of 16 Cortland baseball alumni inducted into the inaugural "Cortland Baseball Legends Club," which recognizes the best players and contributors over more than a 60-year span in the history of the program.

Sue Behme '93
West Henrietta, New York

Sue Behme was a women's soccer and women's lacrosse All-American at Cortland and helped the Red Dragons win the 1992 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer title. She's been a long-time successful women's lacrosse head coach, most recently at the University of Rochester.
 
* A Syracuse native, Sue earned a Bachelor of Science in Education in Recreation and Leisure Studies from Cortland in 1993 and a Master of Science in Recreation and Leisure Studies from SUNY Brockport in 2000.
 
* A four-year women's soccer back from 1989-92 and a four-year women's lacrosse defender/midfielder from 1990-93.
 
* Women's soccer second team All-American and first team all-region, all-state and All-SUNYAC as a senior in 1992. Also All-SUNYAC in 1991. Two-time NCAA Final Four All-Tournament Team (1990, 1992).
 
* Helped soccer team win 1992 NCAA Division III title (17-2-3 record), finish second nationally in 1990 (22-1-3 record), tie for fifth in 1991 and tie for ninth in 1989. During her four seasons the Red Dragons had a combined record of 71-9-12 and registered 66 shutouts in 92 games.
 
* Two-time women's lacrosse All-American, all-region and all-state (1992 and 1993). Career totals of 41 goals and 16 assists. Selected for 1993 North-South Senior All-Star Game. Team was combined 38-24 and won the 1990 ECAC Mid-Atlantic title.
 
* Cortland's 1992-93 Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year.
 
* Women's soccer head coach at SUNY Geneseo from 1995-99. Started Geneseo's women's lacrosse program in 1996 and was 1998 SUNYAC Coach of the Year.
 
* Women's lacrosse head coach at Nazareth College from 1999-2008. Five-time Empire 8 Coach of the Year and 2006 Empire Region Coach of the Year. Led team to six NCAA tournament appearances. Inducted into the Nazareth Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.
 
* Started Division I women's lacrosse program at Fresno State University and coached the Bulldogs' first two seasons in 2009 and 2010. University of Rochester women's lacrosse head coach since October 2010.
 
* Starting defender for the semi-professional Rochester Ravens of the United Soccer Leagues (USL) W-League from 1996-97.
 
* Professional mountain bike racer from 1999-2001; raced on the National Off-Road Bicycle Association (NORBA) National Cross Country Championship Series in 1999-2000.
 
* Member of the USA National handball team that trained at SUNY Cortland. Capped her career on the national team as a starting wing in the Pan American championships in Brazil in 2004-05.
 
* Member of Commission on Women and Gender Equity in Academia working group on Sexual Harassment and Misconduct at the University of Rochester.

Chuck Winters (honorary)
Summerfield, Florida
 
Chuck Winters guided Cortland's men's lacrosse program to two national titles, two national runner-up finishes and a total of nine national tournament appearances in 11 seasons as head coach from 1973-83.
 
* A native of Rochester, N.Y., he earned both a bachelor's degree (1969) and master's degree (1970) in physical education from Bowling Green State University, where he played lacrosse from 1967-69 and was a graduate assistant coach in 1970. Earned honorable mention All-America honors as a senior.
 
* Cortland's men's lacrosse head coach from 1973-83. Also served as men's lacrosse assistant coach from 1970-72 and men's soccer assistant coach from 1970-77.
 
* Led men's lacrosse squad to a combined 94-55 in 11 seasons. Program won the 1973 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) College Division national title and the 1975 NCAA Division II national crown, advanced to the NCAA Division II semifinals in 1974 and 1978, and was the NCAA Division III national runner-up in 1980 and 1981 during the first two years the NCAA sponsored the sport at that division.
 
* His teams made eight straight NCAA appearances from 1974-81, and in the first six years of SUNYAC-sponsored lacrosse from 1978-83 finished a combined 30-1 with five league titles.
 
* Coached 47 All-Americans and 15 North-South Senior Game participants during his 11 seasons as head coach. Head coach of the North squad in the 1979 North-South Game and assistant coach in 1976.
 
* Assistant director of athletics at Cortland from 1977-83. Played a major role in Cortland's hosting of the 1982 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships at Corey Gymnasium.
 
* Served as an athletic administrator at the United States Military Academy West Point for six years (assistant director of athletics from 1983-85; associate director of athletics from 1985-89).
 
* Director of athletics at Gettysburg College from 1989-2002.
 
* Inductee into the Ohio Lacrosse Association Hall of Fame in 2000 and Bowling Green State University Hall of Fame in 2004.
 
* Vice president of the USILA from 1990-92 and USILA Director of Officiating Services from 2009-17. Received USILA's Lifetime Service Award in 2007 and Frenchy Julien Service Award in 2014.
 
* NCAA Secretary of Rules Editor of Men's Lacrosse from 1980-83 and 1992-2008.
 
* Game day administrator for the University of Florida women's lacrosse program since 2009.

Cynthia Wetmore (honorary)
Ithaca, New York
 
Cynthia Wetmore is Cortland's coaching career victories leader in two sports with 271 field hockey wins in 18 seasons from 1998-2015 and 146 women's lacrosse wins in 10 years from 1998-2007. She led the Red Dragons to the 2001 NCAA Division III Field Hockey title.
 
* A native of Beaver Falls, N.Y., she earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Health from the University of Rhode Island in 1982 and a Master of Science in Physical Education with an emphasis in Exercise Physiology from Southern Illinois University in 1985. Attended Herkimer County Community College from 1978-80.
 
* Cortland's women's lacrosse head coach for 10 seasons (1998-2007) and field hockey head coach for 18 seasons (1998-2015). Cortland's career victory leader in both sports (146-37 lacrosse mark and a 271-74 field hockey record).
 
* Led field hockey team to the 2001 NCAA Division III title, NCAA semifinals in 1999 and 2003, and seven other national quarterfinals among 13 total NCAA tournament berths. Program won 13 SUNYAC titles.
 
* Guided women's lacrosse program to nine SUNYAC titles and NCAA tournament appearances, highlighted by a 19-1 finish and national semifinals in 2006.
 
* National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) 2001 Division III National Coach of the Year. Five-time North Atlantic Region, two-time New York and seven-time SUNYAC Coach of the Year. Two-time SUNYAC Women's Lacrosse Coach of the Year and the 2005 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) New York Region Coach of the Year.
 
* SUNY Cortland Athletics C-Club Coach of the Year twice (1999, 2001).
 
* Coached 27 All-Americans and 84 all-region selections in field hockey and 19 All-Americans and 38 all-region honorees in lacrosse.
 
* Cicero-North Syracuse High School field hockey head coach (1990-96) and girls' lacrosse head coach (1986-97). Lacrosse teams were combined 152-14-1, won the first-ever New York State Class A Championships in 1995 and 1996 and was state runner-up in 1997. The 1995-97 squads will be inducted into US Lacrosse Upstate New York Hall of Fame in October, and state title squads will be "Team of Honor" at the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame ceremony in November.
 
* Inducted into the Herkimer College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013 and the US Lacrosse Upstate New York Hall of Fame in 2008. Field hockey All-American at Herkimer who scored a school-record 46 career goals. Captain of field hockey and lacrosse teams at University of Rhode Island.
 
* Coached and played field hockey in Australia, England, Brussels, France, the Netherlands and Scotland.
