SCRANTON, PA. – Sophomore
Blake Aronson (Huntington Station/Walt Whitman) scored his first career goal as a Red Dragon midway through the second half as the nationally 23rd-ranked Cortland men's soccer team defeated Scranton, 1-0, in non-conference action Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore
Jake Kaufman (Poughkeepsie/Spackenkill) assisted on the goal for the Red Dragons (2-0-2). Junior goalie
Sean Kelly (Coram/Newfield) recorded one save for Cortland in posting his second consecutive shutout. Goalie Blake Hammert of Scranton stopped four shots, all in the first half when the Red Dragons outshot the Royals (2-1-1), 9-2.
After a scoreless first half in which Cortland twice hit the post, Aronson notched the game-winner in the 66th minute, heading in a cross from the left side by Kaufman. The goal came minutes after a Scranton goal was waived off due to an offside call. Scranton managed two shots the remainder of the game, but once was blocked and the other went wide. The Royals earned a corner kick with just under a minute to play but could not generate a scoring chance.
