Red Dragons Blank Continentals, 2-0, in Non-Conference Action

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Junior goalie Nick Modica (Suffern/New Jersey Hitmen) registered 45 saves in posting his school-record tying second shutout of the season as the Cortland men's hockey team earned a 2-0 victory versus Hamilton College in non-conference action Monday afternoon in a game postponed two days due to inclement weather.

Sophomores Tom Ritchie (Spencerport/New York PAL Islanders) and Scott Docherty (Oakville, ON/Georgetown Raiders) netted goals for the Red Dragons (8-10). Sophomore Logan Blaser (Aurora, ON/Brockville Braves) and freshmen Oliver Lester (Calgary, AB/Prince George Spruce Kings) and Shane Beaulieu (Brooklin, ON/Powassas VooDoos) each recorded an assist. The 45 saves for Modica were one shy of his career high, set earlier this season.

Freshman goalie Sean Storr (Kingston, ON/Regiopolis-Notre Dame) made 17 saves in his second career start for the Continentals (8-7-1).

Ritchie gave Cortland a 1-0 lead at 12:41 of the first period with his second goal of the season. Lester intercepted an outlet pass by Hamilton just outside the the blueline. He sent a pass to Ritchie on the right side who wristed a shot past Storr from the right circle.

Docherty made a 2-0 score at 17:57 of the second period, netting his second goal of the season. Blaser fired a shot from the left point that Storr stopped, but Docherty collected the rebound and tucked the puck in the open side of the net on the right side of the crease.

In the third period, the Continentals outshot the Red Dragons, 13-5, but could not beat Modica to cut into their deficit. Hamilton pulled Storr for an extra skater with 2:56 remaining and then went on the power play with 1:01 on the clock to have a 6-on-4 on-ice advantage. Modica, however, denied several chances to preserve the shutout and the win.
