Red Dragon Women Battle to the Wire in 150-138 Dual Loss at Division II Le Moyne

Josie LaPolt finished second in both the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke races
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Cortland battled Division II Le Moyne College through the final event before dropping a 150-138 dual-meet decision to the host Dolphins.

Cortland trailed 137-134 entering the 400-yard freestyle relay, setting up a "winner-take-all" scenario in the event for the team title. Le Moyne won the race in 3:44.25 to earn the 11 first-place points and Cortland was second in 3:45.71 for four second-place points. Le Moyne also picked up two points for finishing third.

The Red Dragons earned first-place points in six events along with one relay. Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland) won both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.67) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:35.05). Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) won the 50-yard freestyle (24.91) and was second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.10), and Julia Torell (Camillus/CBA) was the winner in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.04). The combination of Davey, Szewczyk, Marissa Kordal (Eden) and Lily Miller (Buffalo/Starpoint) won the 200-yard medley relay (1:54.52).

Cortland had the lone two diving competitors at the meet. Since there was no 3-meter event, the 1-meter competition was broken down and scored as two parts. Taylor Williams (Middletown/Minisink Valley) won both sections with scores of 256.00 and 167.90 points for a combined total of 423.90 points. Morgan Boone (Rome/Notre Dame) was second in both sections with 160.70 and 120.65 points for a total of 281.35.

Kordal earned second-place points in three events with times of 57.08 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle, 2:19.08 in the 200-yard butterfly and 2:21.77 in the 200-yard individual medley. Josie LaPolt (New Paltz) was runner-up in both the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.61) and 200-yard backstroke (2:21.44) and Vanessa Vegder (Dansville) placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:38.72). Cortland's second-place 400-yard freestyle relay team in the final event consisted of Miller, Kailyn Anselment (Moreau/Glens Falls), Allison Lemischak (Hastings-on-Hudson/Hastings) and Davey.

Cortland will host Oneonta next Saturday at 1 p.m.
