Cortland Wins Shootout at Hartwick

ONEONTA, N.Y. – For a single-season school-record seventh time, the Cortland field hockey team won an overtime contest when senior Molly Quinlan (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) scored in the sixth round of a shootout to give the Red Dragons a 3-2 victory at Hartwick in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon.

Cortland improved to 11-3 on the season with the win and broke a tie of six overtime games with the 1989 and 2013 teams. The Hawks fell to 8-5 with the setback.

Senior Hannah Burchell (Whitney Point) and freshman Lily Fox (Northport) each scored regulation goals for the Red Dragons. Quinlan and junior Allie Bianchi (Richmond, VT/Mount Mansfield Union) chipped in with one assist apiece. Senior goalie Marisa D'Amico turned aside 15 shots.

Sydney Gagnon and Brooke Singer tallied the goals for Hartwick with Rebecca Peakes picking up an assist. Goalie Allyson Osborne made 18 saves, including 10 during the two scoreless 10-minute overtime periods.

Gagnon gave the Hawks the lead 7:15 into the second quarter. She stole the ball at the top of the circle, put a high shot on goal that D'Amico saved and knocked the rebound under the Cortland goalie. The lead held until Burchell tied the game 1:34 before the end of the third quarter after a penalty corner. Bianchi fed a pass to Burchell who sent a shot off the right post and over the goal line.

Fox put the Red Dragons ahead just 1:44 into the fourth quarter as Cortland scored again off a penalty corner. An initial shot was stopped by Osborne, but Quinlan sent a pass on the rebound to Fox who tipped the ball in the goal. Singer sent the game to extra time at the 49:53 mark with her shot that deflected off D'Amico and in the goal on a penalty corner.

Over the two seven-on-seven overtime periods, Cortland outshot Hartwick, 11-6, but the game went into a shootout tied at 2-2.

Each goalie made saves on the first of five attempts in the first round. After D'Amico denied Hartwick's second chance with multiple saves, Quinlan put Cortland up, 1-0. Singer and Burchell each then converted, and Cortland led, 2-1, with two attempts remaining. Each goalie turned aside chances on the fourth attempt before the Hawks tied it at 2-2 on their fifth try in the rotation. Cortland sophomore Alanie Gentner (Saratoga Springs) was denied in her opportunity to give Cortland the win, sending the shootout into a sudden-victory situation.

Quinlan opened with a goal on a reverse-stick shot, forcing Hartwick to score to keep the game going. On her attempt, Hartwick's Bella Wheeler worked a deke to create an open shot, but D'Amico recovered and made a diving save just before the horn to preserve the win.
