CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland field hockey team built a 3-0 halftime lead and defeated Houghton by the same score Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at Stadium White. The Red Dragons improved to 12-3 on the season with the win, while the Highlanders dropped to 5-10.
Senior
Molly Quinlan (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) led Cortland with two goals. Senior
Hannah Burchell (Whitney Point) tallied one goal and one assist, and freshman
Lily Fox (Northport) collected an assist. Senior goalie
Marisa D'Amico (Smithtown/Smithtown West) made two saves.
Junior goalie Sarah Olandt (Seaville, NJ/Ocean City) registered 13 saves for Houghton, including 10 in the first half. Junior Caitlin Jennings (Vestal) recorded two defensive saves.
Burchell scored the game-winning goal 7:29 into the game. She took a pass from Fox off a penalty corner and drove a shot off the left post and into the cage for her sixth goal of the season. The Red Dragons went ahead just past the midway point of the second quarter on Quinlan's first goal of the game. After collecting a pass near midfield, she carried down the left side, cut inside, alluded a defender and beat Olandt with a low shot for her 10th goal of the season. Quinlan completed the scoring in the game with a redirect of Burchell's pass inside the right post 11 seconds before the half, notching her team-high 11th goal of the season.
