Red Dragons Secure Second Place in SUNYAC with 3-2 Double OT Win at New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Freshman Lily Fox (Northport) scored with 3:31 remaining in the second 10-minute overtime period to lift the Cortland field hockey team to a 3-2 win at New Paltz Saturday afternoon in SUNYAC action. With the win, the Red Dragons improved to 13-3 overall and 4-1 in the conference and secured the second seed in the upcoming league tournament. The Hawks fell to 9-6 and 3-2 with the loss.

Senior Hannah Burchell (Whitney Point) paced Cortland with one goal and one assist, while senior Molly Quinlan (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) added a goal. Senior goalie Marisa D'Amico (Smithtown/Smithtown West) recorded 10 saves. Sophomore Alanie Genter (Saratoga Springs) registered a defensive save.

Natasia Plunkett tallied both of New Paltz's goals with Shannon Bernhardt collecting an assist. Goalie Mackenzie Mortimer turned aside 13 shots. Kayla Ahern made two defensive saves, and Courtney Kruzikas and Jessica Ascencao each contributed one defensive save.

Plunkett put the Hawks in front 1:01 before the end of the first quarter, but Quinlan's team-high 12th goal of the season at the 24:38 mark tied the game at 1-1 going into the half.

Burchell's unassisted goal, her seventh tally of the season, 4:02 into the third quarter gave Cortland a 2-1 lead. Plunkett's second goal of the game just 52 seconds later evened the score, and, after a scoreless fourth quarter, the game went into overtime, which extended the Red Dragons' single-season record of extra-time games to eight.

The Red Dragons dominated the first 10-minute overtime period, outshooting the Hawks, 8-0, but Mortimer came up big with six saves. In the second extra session, Fox notched the game winner off an assist from Burchell to give Cortland its eighth overtime win of the season.
