Cortland Sweeps Oneonta Behind Southcott's 13 Kills

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Hannah Southcott (Princeton, WV) recorded 13 kills and a .462 attack percentage as Cortland improved to 2-0 in SUNYAC play with a 25-13, 25-20, 25-14 sweep of visiting Oneonta.

Cortland (18-6 overall) will host defending league champion New Paltz Saturday at 1 p.m.

Southcott committed just one attack error in 26 attempts and also finished with seven digs. Bridgette Moran (Massapequa Park/St. John the Baptist) and Nicole Van Pelt (Montgomery/Valley Central) each totaled seven blocks (one solo, six assists) and Gabby Amelio (Pine Bush) served seven aces. Moran also registered five kills and Amelio had eight digs and 17 assists.

Nadia Moore (Durham, NC/Durham School of the Arts) added six kills and five digs, Kiersten Cote (East Rockaway/Kellenberg Memorial) had three aces and Carly Haegele (Commack) led the Red Dragons with 11 digs.

Adriana Losier led Oneonta (15-4, 3-1 SUNYAC) with 10 kills, followed by Clara Culeton with eight. Jessica Fowler handed out 24 assists and Jessica Travaglia led the team with nine digs.

Cortland went on a 9-0 run in the first set to extend an 11-9 lead to 20-9. Southcott had two kills and Moran and Van Pelt combined for two blocks during that run. Cortland trailed 18-13 in the second set and was still down by three at 20-17 before scoring the final eight points of the set, the final two on kills by Moran.

In the third set, Cortland took an early 5-1 lead and never trailed. Oneonta was within 10-7 after two Cortland errors, but the hosts rattled off an 11-3 run to all but seal the victory. Four of Amelio's seven aces came during that decisive streak.

Cortland finished hitting .216 as a team while holding Oneonta to a .048 attack percentage.
