CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior
Amanda Glaser (Melville/Walt Whitman) scored with 5:25 left in the second sudden-victory overtime period to lift Cortland past visiting St. John Fisher, 2-1, in a non-league field hockey matchup.
Cortland improved to 9-3 with the victory and is now 5-0 in overtime games this fall. St. John Fisher, the current leader in the Empire 8, dropped to 7-3 despite holding a 26-14 advantage in shots and 21-10 edge in penalty corners.
Cortland senior goalie
Marisa D'Amico (Smithtown/Smithtown West) made a career-high 18 saves, including six in the second half and four in overtime. St. John Fisher goalie Kelly Bergamo finished with four saves.
Fisher took a 1-0 lead 8:22 into the second quarter. A penalty corner play led to scramble in front of the cage, and Jess Snyder eventually sent a short pass across the goal mouth area to Reghan Amoroso, who poked the ball in for her third goal of the season. The Cardinals threatened at the end of the second with three penalty corners after time had expired, but D'Amico made two saves and
Sara Reardon (Little Falls) had a defensive save during that stretch to keep the Fisher lead at one.
Cortland knotted the game with 10:36 left in regulation.
Hannah Burchell (Whitney Point) sent a pass from the middle of the field to
Amanda D'Amico (Smithtown/Smithtown West), who dribbled into the circle on the right side. D'Amico launched a shot that deflected off a Fisher defender found the cage for her second goal of the year.
The teams played a scoreless 10-minute overtime period and were just over four minutes into the second 7-versus-7 extra session when
Molly Quinlan (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) sent a pass from the right side to Glaser in the circle. Glaser squared up against her defender and made a move to get past her. Bergamo moved off her line and dove in an attempt to knock the ball away, but Glaser slipped a shot under the goalie from about 10 feet out and the ball just eluded a diving Fisher defender at the goal line for the game winner. The goal was Glaser's third of the season.
Cortland will travel to Oswego for a SUNYAC contest Saturday at 11 a.m.
