Davey and Torell Set School Records During Friday's SUNYAC Championship Action

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) and Julia Torell (Camillus/CBA) each set school records to help Cortland strengthen its second-place position in the team standings during the second full day of competition at the SUNYAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.

Cortland has 357 points, 59 better than third-place Oswego (298) and 65 ahead of fourth-place New Paltz (292). Geneseo leads the championship with 770 points. Rounding out the nine-team field are Oneonta (262), Brockport (191), Fredonia (151), Potsdam (145) and Buffalo St. (100). The final day of competition will be held Saturday at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Center.

Davey finished second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:52.68 to break the previous school record of 1:54.36 set by Sarah Culmo in 2014. Davey was edged in the race by less than four tenths of a second. Torell broke the school record in the 100-yard butterfly during prelims with a time of 57.32 seconds and she finished third in the finals at 57.73 seconds. The previous school record was 57.65 seconds by Chrisanna Hickey in 2014.

Torell also swam the butterfly leg on Cortland's 200-yard medley relay team that finished third in 1:49.59. Josie LaPolt (New Paltz) led off with the backstroke leg, followed by Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland) in the breaststroke, Torell in the butterfly and Lily Miller (Buffalo/Starpoint) in the freestyle.

The top three finishers in each event earn All-SUNYAC honors. Winners are first team, runners-up are second team and third-place finishers are third team.

Cortland earned five other top-six showings during Friday's action. Szewczyk was fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.63) and Taylor Williams (Middletown/Minisink Valley) placed fifth in 1-meter diving (427.05 points). Marissa Kordal (Eden) was sixth in the 400-yard individual medley (4:44.99), Vanessa Vegder (Dansville) finished sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.79) and Torell was sixth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.42).

Iris Incitti (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) and Becca Kanoza (Syracuse/West Genesee) each won "B" finals to earn ninth-place points – Incitti in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.53) and Kanoza in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.13). Kailyn Anselment (Moreau/Glens Falls) was 10th in the 400-yard IM (4:52.16).

Erica Koumas (East Meadow) scored points in two events with a 12th-place showing in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.79, 1:00.31 prelims) and 13th-place effort in the 400-yard IM (4:58.04, 4:56.52 prelims). Rebecca Diers (Bethpage) was 12th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.28), followed by Emma Gulbin (Wall Township, NJ/Wall) in 13th (1:12.93, 1:12.29 prelims). Other Red Dragon scorers included LaPolt in the 100-yard backstroke (14th place, 1:03.31, 1:02.06 prelims), Miller in the 200-yard freestyle (16th place, 2:05.64, 2:03.37 prelims), and Kelcey Madigan (Waverly) in the 100-yard breaststroke (16th place, 1:15.95, 1:13.76 prelims).
