Torell League 200 Fly Record, Davey School Mark in 100 Free, at Final Day of SUNYACs

Julia Torell stands atop the podium after breaking the SUNYAC record in the 200-yard butterfly. Erica Koumas (4th) and Marissa Kordal (7th) also swam in the finals of the event.
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Freshman Julia Torell (Camillus/CBA) set conference, meet and school records in the 200-yard butterfly and junior Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) broke the school record with her winning performance in the 100-yard freestyle to help Cortland finish in second place at the 2019 SUNYAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. The meet was held at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Center primarily Thursday through Saturday, with two events being conducted Wednesday.

Cortland notched its best team finish since back-to-back second-place showings in 2013 and 2014. The Red Dragons have finished in the top three 13 times in the last 16 years. Geneseo won its 12th straight league title and 27th overall with 1,048 points, followed by Cortland (531), Oswego (434), New Paltz (426), Oneonta (377), Brockport (238), Fredonia (207), Potsdam (204) and Buffalo St. (130).

Torell won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:06.74, breaking the previous SUNYAC record of 2:06.80 set by New Paltz's Carly Marshall in 2013 and the school record of 2:07.30 established by Liz Neddo in 2009.

Davey won the 100-yard freestyle in 51.56 seconds to nip the previous school record of 51.71 seconds by Sarah Culmo in 2013. Davey's time is her second NCAA "B" cut at the meet – her first was her prelim time of 23.41 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle Thursday. Her efforts put her in position to possibly qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships, which will be held next month.

Torell and Davey also swam the final two legs of Cortland's 400-yard freestyle relay that finished third in 3:34.91. Marissa Kordal (Eden) and Lily Miller (Buffalo/Starpoint) swam the first two 100-yard stretches. The top three finishers in each event earn All-SUNYAC status.

Cortland earned four other top-eight finishes Saturday. Erica Koumas (East Meadow) was fourth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:11.31), with Kordal in seventh place (2:13.35). Kailyn Anselment (Moreau/Glens Falls) finished fifth in the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:23.07) and Vanessa Vegder (Dansville) placed eighth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:33.49, 2:32.41 prelims).

Becca Kanoza (Syracuse/West Genesee) won the "B" final in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:15.56 to finish ninth overall. Isabelle French (Centerport/Harborfields) also earned ninth-place points with her time of 18:48.92 in the 1,650-yard freestyle and was 16th in the 200-yard butterfly (2:24.41, 2:20.15 prelims). Miller was 11th in the 100-yard freestyle (54.32). Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland) finished 11th in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:35.06), followed by Iris Incitti (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) in 12th (2:35.73, 2:33.47 prelims), Emma Gulbin (Wall Township, NJ/Wall) in 14th (2:38.05, 2:37.24 prelims) and Kelcey Madigan (Waverly) in 15th (2:42.25, 2:40.92 prelims).

Allison Lemischak (Hastings-on-Hudson/Hastings) finished 13th in the 100-yard freestyle (55.75) and Josie LaPolt (New Paltz) was 13th in the 200-yard backstroke (2:17.34, 2:16.97 prelims). Abbey Gittschau (Camillus/West Genesee) was 16th in the 1,650-yard freestyle (19:41.78).
