GENESEO, N.Y. – Junior goalie
Nick Modica (Suffern/New Jersey Hitmen) recorded a career-high 61 saves, but the Cortland men's ice hockey team couldn't find the back of the net as it was shut out by nationally second-ranked Geneseo, 3-0, in a SUNYAC matchup. With the loss, the Red Dragons drop to 9-13 overall and 3-10 in the conference, while the Knights improve to 20-1-1 and 11-1-1.
The Knights' first goal of the game came nearly 17 minutes into the first period after a Cortland penalty led to a power-play opportunity for Geneseo. During the 5-on-4 advantage, Cam Russell directed a pass to Arthur Gordon who sent the puck past Modica for the lone goal of the first period.
The second period saw a lopsided attack in favor of Geneseo, which outshot Cortland, 26-2, over the 20 minutes. However, the Cortland defense stood strong and Modica turned away all 26 shots that he faced in the period to keep the game within reach for the Red Dragons.
In the third period, The Knights made it a 2-0 game on another power-play opportunity as Conlan Keenan tallied his 19th goal of the season. Duggie Lagrone and Andrew Romano each collected an assist on the score. Then, with just over a minute remaining in the final period, Geneseo sealed the win when Tyson Empey scored an empty-net goal after Cortland pulled Modica for an extra skater.
