Cortland Women Dominant in 184-84 Home Dual Victory Over Fredonia

Hallie Marquart, Cortland's lone senior, won the 100-yard butterfly and finished second in the 200-yard butterfly
CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's swimming and diving team wrapped up its regular-season schedule with a 184-84 dual win over visiting Fredonia. The Red Dragons recorded the best performances in 11 individual events and both relays en route to the win.

Marissa Kordal (Eden) won the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.98) and 500-yard freestyle (5:28.58), and also had the top time as an exhibition entry in the 400-yard individual medley (4:54.28). Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) was victorious in both the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.03) and the 100-yard freestyle (55.16).

Cortland's lone senior Hallie Marquart (Geneva) picked up a win in the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.00) and was second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:24.19). Rebecca Diers (Bethpage) was the 100-yard breaststroke winner (1:13.90), Erica Koumas (East Meadow) won the 200-yard butterfly (2:18.25) and Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland) was victorious in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:35.10).

The Red Dragons swept the top three spots in four races. Davey was followed in the 100-yard backstroke by Becca Kanoza (Syracuse/West Genesee) in second (1:05.68) and Josie LaPolt (New Paltz) in third (1:07.06). The 200-yard breaststroke featured Szewczyk in first followed by Emma Gulbin (Wall Township, NJ/Wall) in second (2:39.86) and Vanessa Vegder (Dansville) in third (2:43.17). In the 100-yard butterfly, Marquart's win was backed up by Sarah Colefield (Oakdale/Connetquot) in second (1:08.39) and Alexa Irwin (Pine Bush) in third (1:09.33). And in the 200-yard butterfly, Koumas and Marquart took the top two spots and Isabelle French (Centerport/Harborfields) was third (2:29.36).

Taylor Williams (Middletown/Minisink Valley) earned first-place points in both 1-meter (239.80 points) and 3-meter (225.40 points) diving. Morgan Boone (Rome/Notre Dame) was second with 146.60 points on 1-meter and 127.40 points on 3-meter.

Cortland opened the meet by taking the top two spots in the 400-yard medley relay. Davey, Szewczyk, Koumas and Vegder won the race in 4:10.28 and Kanoza, Iris Incitti (Endwell/Maine-Endwell), Irwin and Allison Lemischak (Hastings-on-Hudson/Hastings) were second in 4:27.98. As an exhibition entry, the 200-yard freestyle relay of Davey, Lemischak, Gulbin and Kailyn Anselment (Moreau/Glens Falls) posted the fastest time at 1:43.21.

Also for the Red Dragons, Anselment was second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:32.45), Kanoza was second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:22.67), Gulbin placed second in the 50-yard freestyle (26.92) and Lily Miller (Buffalo/Starpoint) was runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle (57.37).

Cortland will compete at the SUNYAC Championships Feb. 20-23 at Erie Community College in Buffalo.
