Offense Erupts in 25-9 Win at Morrisville St.

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Cortland men's lacrosse team opened up a 15-3 halftime lead and 12 players overall netted goals in defeating Morrisville, 25-9, in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon. The Red Dragons improved to 2-2 with the win, while the Mustangs dropped to 0-2.

Senior Terrence Haggerty (Centerport/Harborfields) led the offense with a career-high seven points on a career-best six goals and one assist. Senior Dean Riley (Homer) netted four goals, freshman Dante Yacavone (Homer) matched Haggerty's seven points with three goals and four assists, both career highs, and senior Joey Panariello (Islip) tallied three goals and three assists.

Senior Alex Waelder (Syracuse/Corcoran) set new highs of five points and four assists, adding a goal. Sophomore Steven Veteri (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) scored his first two career goals as a Red Dragon. Freshman Matt Zarzycki (West Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) recorded the first points of his career with one goal and two assists. Juniors Corey McMahon (Lindenhurst/St. John the Baptist) and Tristan Moreno (Clarkstown/Clarkstown North) and sophomore Mike Nicholson (North Babylon/St. Anthony's) each recorded one goal and one assist.

Junior Danny Caroussos (Smithtown/Smithtown West) and sophomores Jonathan Ecker (Ontario/Wayne) netted one goal apiece, while junior Brian Williams (Holtsville/Sachem East) registered two assists.

All five goalies on Cortland's roster saw action in the win. Junior Jon Vargas (West Islip) earned the start, stopping nine shots and allowing just three goals in 35:04. Freshman Marc Esposito (West Babylon) made one save in 12:37, and junior Jake Craybas (Bethel, CT) turned aside one shot in  2:58. Sophomore Charlie Ricottoni (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills West) saw his first career action, playing 3:02, while freshman J.J. Johnson (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) saw the field for 6:19 in his first collegiate action.

Williams won 17-of-19 faceoffs and collected a game-high 12 ground balls for the Red Dragons. Sophomore Kevin Tiedemann (Comsewogue) won 6-of-11 faceoffs with four ground balls. Freshman Troy Morris (Long Beach) caused two turnovers.

Joseph Rosaschi led Morrisville with four goals. Nick Geswaldo scored three goals, Chris Dovi recorded one goal and three assists and Zach Palin chipped in with a goal. Peter Pina and Joe Piedigrossi each contributed an assist.

Goalie John Henry Alvarado made 10 saves for the Mustangs. Shawn Walberger won nine faceoffs and secured seven ground balls. Zach Mabry scooped up five ground balls, Brendan Boles registered four ground balls and two caused turnovers and Chad Warren finished with four ground balls.

Cortland scored the first seven goals of the game just past the midway point of the first quarter as Haggerty scored three times and Panariello netted a pair of goals. The Red Dragons took an 8-1 lead into the second quarter, pushing the advantage to 13-1 at the 6:03 mark and ultimately grabbing a 15-3 lead at the break.

Five straight goals to open the third quarter pushed the advantage to 20-3 before Morrisville scored three of the next five goals to make it a 22-6 game heading into the final quarter where the teams split six goals for the 25-9 final.
