Big First Half Leads to 16-7 Win at Farmingdale

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The Cortland men's lacrosse team opened up a 12-3 halftime lead and went on to a 16-7 victory at Farmingdale St. in non-conference action Friday night. The Red Dragons won their third consecutive game and improved to 3-2, while the Rams dropped to 3-3.

Seven different players netted goals for Cortland, led by seniors Joey Panariello (Islip) and Terrence Haggerty (Centerport/Harborfields). Panariello recorded six points on five goals and one assist, and Haggerty compiled five points on four goals and one assist.

Freshman Dante Yacavone (Homer) tallied two goals and two assists, sophomore Brandon Stiles (Mastic/Eastport-South Manor) scored two goals and junior Corey McMahon (Lindenhurst/St. John the Baptist) had one goal and one assist for the Red Dragons. Seniors Dean Riley (Homer) and Alex Waelder (Syracuse/Corcoran) netted one goal apiece. Juniors Michael Carrello (Bethpage) and Danny Caroussos (Smithtown/Smithtown West) and freshman Troy Morris (Long Beach) each collected one assist.

Junior Jon Vargas (West Islip) started in goal for Cortland, stopping six shots in 55:26. Freshman Marc Esposito (West Babylon) played the final 4:34, making two saves. Junior Brian Williams (Holtsville/Sachem East) won 20-of-23 faceoffs and collected 18 ground balls, and freshman Dominick Natale (Homer) scooped up four ground balls.

Jake Satterley and Jake Wandle paced Farmingdale with two goals each. A.J. Sandorfi, Jack Livingston and James Ragland netted one goal apiece. Peter Engelken registered two assists and Richard Russo recorded one assist.

Goalie Dan Wood made 17 saves. Livingston caused three turnovers, and Brodie Culkin and Dan Panzarino each secured three ground balls.

The Red Dragons opened up a 4-0 lead just past the midway point of the first quarter before taking a 6-1 lead after the first 15 minutes of play. Farmingdale made it a 7-3 game, but Cortland closed the first half on a 5-0 run for a 12-3 lead and netted the only two goals of the third quarter to push its lead to 14-3. The Rams scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to make it a 14-5 game at 13:34, but the Red Dragons answered with two goals to build a 16-5 lead before Farmingdale netted the last two goals of the game for the 16-7 final.
