FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. – Senior
Dean Riley (Homer) scored a career-high eight points on three goals and a career-best five assists to become the 56th player in program history to reach 100 career points in leading the Cortland men's lacrosse team to a 22-11 victory over Clarkson University in non-conference action at Nova Southeastern University in rainy Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Tuesday afternoon. The Red Dragons won their fourth straight game to improve to 4-2, while the Golden Knights dropped to 4-2.
Riley, who now has 106 career points on 52 goals and 56 assists, was one of 12 goal scorers for Cortland. Senior
Terrence Haggerty (Centerport/Harborfields) tallied five points on four goals and one assist, freshman
Dante Yacavone (Homer) recorded three goals and two assists and junior
Corey McMahon (Lindenhurst/St. John the Baptist) also netted three goals.
Sophomore
Brandon Stiles (Mastic/Eastport-South Manor) scored twice, senior
Joey Panariello (Islip) totaled one goal and four assists and junior
Danny Caroussos (Smithtown/Smithtown West) chipped in with one goal and one assist. Junior
Michael Dignan (North Kingstown, RI/La Salle Academy) scored his first goal of the season, senior
Alex Waelder (Syracuse/Corcoran), sophomore
Steven Veteri (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) and freshman
Troy Morris (Long Beach) each netted a goal and freshman
Tim Grosso (Hauppauge) picked up the first goal of his career.
Junior goalie
Jon Vargas (West Islip) made eight saves and collected three ground balls in 55:15 before giving way to freshman
Marc Esposito (West Babylon), who stopped the only shot he faced on goal over the final 4:45. Junior
Brian Williams (Holtsville/Sachem East) won 16 faceoffs and collected 10 ground balls. Sophomore
Mike Nicholson (North Babylon/St. Anthony's) caused four turnovers, and Caroussos and sophomore
Brandon Croteau (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) secured three ground balls apiece.
Tanner Cioffi led Clarkson with three goals and an assist. Bryan Penney and Evan Burgett each scored a pair of goals. Marcus Lavarnway recorded one goal and one assists, and Peter Herrick, Billy Bergan and Derek Beatty netted one goal apiece. Conor Bartlett and Shane Kilday contributed two assists.
Goalie Kevin Dyckman registered 12 saves. Riley Holzman won 19-of-34 faceoffs and scooped up a game-high 11 ground balls. Penney and Burgett each added four ground balls and Beatty and Trevor Borchardt caused two turnovers apiece.
The Red Dragons started quickly, jumping out to a 5-0 lead less than five minutes into the game as five different players scored. After Cioffi put Clarkson on the scoreboard at 9:07 with a man-up goal, the Red Dragons closed the first quarter with three of the next four goals for an 8-2 lead. The Golden Knights turned the tables in the second quarter to pull to within 9-6 at the half. After Burgett and Caroussos traded goals, Clarkson closed out the second quarter with three straight goals.
Penney scored just 1:20 into the third quarter to make it a 9-7 game, but Haggerty started a nine-goal Cortland run just 11 seconds later to put the Red Dragons in command at 18-7 with 5:14 remaining in the quarter. The scoring spree featured four man-up goals on a Clarkson two-minute non-releasable penalty. Riley alone accounted for three goals and four assists and reached his 100-point milestone with a goal at the 12:35 mark.
The Golden Knights stemmed the momentum by finishing off the third quarter with three consecutive goals and trailed 18-10 heading to the final 15 minutes of play. After Dignan and Beatty traded goals, Cortland ended the game with goals from Yacavone, Veteri and Grosso for the 22-11 final.
The Red Dragons return to action on Friday at 7 p.m., when they face nationally seventh-ranked Wesleyan University, the defending Div. III national champion, at St. Thomas Aquinas High School also in Fort Lauderdale.
