Strong Second Half Propels Red Dragons to Victory

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally 15th-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team held Union scoreless for 44 minutes and 27 seconds and scored five second-half goals to defeat the Dutchwomen, 8-4, in non-conference play Tuesday afternoon at the Stadium Complex. The win improves the Red Dragons to 2-1, while the loss drops the Dutchwomen to 0-1. 

Juniors Molly Newton (Skaneateles) and Brie Yonge (Penn Yan/Penn Yan Academy) recorded two goals and one assist apiece in the victory. Senior Carly Stone (Syracuse/Jamesville-DeWitt) aided the Red Dragons in their scoring efforts by adding two goals.

Sophomores Cecilia Procopio (Syracuse/West Genesee) and Hannah Lorenzen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) each scored a goal and recorded an assist for Cortland. Junior Lexie Meager (Syracuse/West Genesee) won five draw controls, recovered two groundballs and caused one turnover.

Sophomore goalie Annie Casey (Bay Shore) made six saves for the Red Dragons.  Freshman Amanda Squillini (Stony Point/North Rockland) scooped up four groundballs, caused three turnovers and recorded three draw controls.

Sophomore Lindsay Geratto (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) paced the Dutchwomen with two goals. Seniors Kellie Cronin (Westwood, MA/Westwood) and Ramsey Walsh (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) each scored one goal, and freshman Grace Heiting (Woodbury, MN/Gentry Academy) recorded an assist.

Junior goalie Ellen Taney (Darien, CT/Darien) made eight saves and also recorded five groundballs. Senior Emma Lowrey (Chappaqua/Horace Greeley) recovered six groundballs and caused one turnover. The Dutchwomen forced 13 turnovers during the game.

Union scored the first goal of the game with 2:20 elapsed from the game clock in the first half. Newton and Procopio each scored a goal in a 27-second span to put the Red Dragons up, 2-1. After a pair of Union goals that gave the Dutchwomen a 3-2 lead, Yonge scored an unassisted goal to tie the game, 3-3. There was no more scoring in the first half. 

The second half was largely controlled by Cortland. The Red Dragons scored five unanswered goals in the half to extend their lead to 8-3. Cortland didn't allow a Union goal in the second half until there were just 30 seconds remaining, making the final score 8-4.

The Red Dragons return to action on Saturday, March 16, when they take on Catholic. That game is a neutral-site game that will be played in Mount Sinai, N.Y., and is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
