Quick Start Leads to 19-6 Win vs. Scranton

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland's starting attack unit combined for 12 goals and four assists to lead the Red Dragons to a 19-6 non-conference victory versus Scranton Wednesday night at the Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons improved to 5-3, while the Royals fell to 5-5.

Senior Terrence Haggerty (Centerport/Harborfields) led Cortland with a career-high eight points on five goals and three assists. Senior Joey Panariello (Islip) netted four goals, and senior Dean Riley (Homer) tallied three goals and one assist.

Freshman Dante Yacavone (Homer) recorded two goals and one assist, junior Michael Dignan (North Kingstown, RI/La Salle Academy) scored twice and junior Danny Caroussos (Smithtown/Smithtown West) and freshmen Troy Morris (Long Beach) and Anthony Marcuccilli (Geneva) each added a goal with Marcuccilli's being the first of his career for the Red Dragons.

Junior Jon Vargas (West Islip) started in goal for Cortland, stopping eight shots in 49:07. Freshman Marc Esposito (West Babylon) played the final 10:53, making one save. Junior Brian Williams (Holtsville/Sachem East) won 17-of-21 faceoffs and collected 13 ground balls. Sophomore Mike Nicholson (North Babylon/St. Anthony's) caused three turnovers and scooped up three ground balls. Caroussos and sophomore Brandon Croteau (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) each secured four ground balls, and freshman Dominick Natale (Homer) picked up an assist and three ground balls.

Sophomore Jalen Holmes (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) paced Scranton's offense with two goals and an assist. Freshman Mike Bouhall (Lynbrook) netted two goals, and junior Michael Elefonte (Kinnelon, NJ) and sophomore Brian Dignen (Chester Springs, PA/Downingtown East) each scored once.

Sophomore Shayne Fallon (West Deptford, NJ) started in goal for the Royals, registering 16 saves and four ground balls through the first three quarters. Freshman T.J. Grogan (West Nyack/Clarkstown South) made two saves in 11:21, and junior Matt Grilli (Chatham, NJ) turned aside two shots in 3:39. Freshman Christopher Coico (South Hempstead/South Side) led Scranton with five ground balls.

Holmes started the scoring with his first goal 3:33 into the game, but the Red Dragons ended the opening quarter with a six-goal run on two goals apiece from Haggerty, Panariello and Haggerty. The lead grew to 9-1 early in the second quarter before Dignen scored a man-up goal to make it an 9-2 score at the 7:04 mark. Cortland answered with a goal from Panariello and Yacavone's man-up goal to take an 11-2 lead into intermission.

The Red Dragons stretched their advantage to 14-2 as Riley netted a goal and Haggerty scored twice in the first five minutes of the third quarter. The Royals cut their deficit to 14-5 heading into the final 15 minutes with three goals. Cortland sealed the win by outscoring Scranton, 5-1, in the fourth quarter for the 19-6 final.
