Dane Sorensen competes in the pole vault during Day 1 of the 2019 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships
BOSTON, MASS. – Five Cortland athletes competed during Day 1 of the NCAA Division III Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships. The two-day championship is being held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center.
Storm Malone (Highland) barely missed qualifying for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles with a ninth-place preliminary time of 8.23 seconds in a field of 19 entrants. His time was two hundredths of a second shy of sending him to the finals for the third straight year. Mount Union's Connor Troyer had the best opening-day time at 8.07 seconds, while Adrian's Jordan Davis won Malone's heat in 8.13 seconds. Malone was third in heat, with the second-place finisher Oliver Thomas of WPI earning the final qualifying spot at 8.21 seconds.
Dane Sorensen (Warwick/Warwick Valley) finished 12th nationally in the pole vault after clearing 4.60 meters (15' 1"). He was successful on his first attempts at 4.45 meters and 4.60 meters before missing on three tries at 4.75 meters (15' 7"). Sorensen was one of four competitors to finish at 4.60 meters and earned the highest spot of that group since the other three took three attempts to clear that height. North Central's Luke Winder won the national title with a height of 5.30 meters (17' 4.5").
Isaiah Brooks (Minoa/East Syracuse Minoa) is currently 14th and
Zach Kashmer (Chili/Churchville-Chili) is 19th after the opening day of the heptathlon. Brooks has 2,654 points but sits only 55 points out of eighth place with three events remaining Saturday. Kashmer has 2,027 points, resulting mainly from fouling in the long jump and not scoring in that event.
Brooks scored 769 points in the 60-meter dash (7.33), 679 points in the high jump (1.86 meters/6' 1.25") and 657 points in the long jump (6.32 meters/20' 9"). Kashmer's best scores were 723 points in the 60-meter dash (7.47) and 731 points in the high jump (1.92 meters/6' 3.5"). The final three events Saturday are the 60-meter hurdles, the pole vault and the 1,000-meter run.
Peyton Lalone (Ogdensburg/Ogdensburg Free Academy) finished 19th in the 200-meter dash with a preliminary time of 22.54 seconds. Lalone, less than two weeks removed from an injury during the SUNYAC Championships that kept him sidelined last weekend, got off to a strong start in the event's final heat but struggled at the end of the race.
Saturday's action begins with the heptathlon at 10 a.m. The Red Dragons will have two competitors in the triple jump at 2 p.m. –
Micah Assibey-Bonsu (Central Islip) and
C.J. White (Middletown).
