Cortland Tops Geneseo, 13-10, with Fourth-Quarter Run

GENESEO, N.Y. – The Cortland men's lacrosse team scored four consecutive goals in the fourth quarter to break away from a 9-9 tie and defeated Geneseo, 13-10, Wednesday afternoon in SUNYAC play at College Field. The Red Dragons improved to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in the conference. The Knights dropped to 4-9 and 1-2.

Senior Terrence Haggerty (Centerport/Harborfields) led the Cortland offense with four goals. Senior Joey Panariello (Islip) netted three goals, and senior Dean Riley (Homer) scored twice. Junior Tristan Moreno (Clarkstown/Clarkstown North) and freshman Troy Morris (Long Beach) each tallied one goal and one assist, senior Alex Waelder (Syracuse/Corcoran) and junior Corey McMahon (Lindenhurst/St. John the Baptist) chipped in with one goal apiece and freshmen Dante Yacavone (Homer) and Justin Wainwright (Homer) picked up one assist each.

Freshman goalie Marc Esposito (West Babylon), making his second career start for the Red Dragons, turned aside 14 shots, including five in the decisive fourth quarter. Junior Brian Williams (Holtsville/Sachem East) won 21-of-25 faceoffs and collected a game-high 11 ground balls. Freshman Dominick Natale (Homer) scooped up five ground balls, and Wainwright secured four ground balls.

James Pratt recorded a game-high eight points on four goals and four assists to pace the Geneseo offense. Tim Fallo, Jake Bucci and Connor Griffin each netted two goals, while Patrick Morris and Jack Joyce contributed one assist apiece. Goalie Tyler Wetzel made 17 saves. Pratt, Ryan McMullen and Cameron Chiodo led the Knights with three ground balls each.

Cortland opened the game with a 4-0 lead after the first quarter as Haggerty scored twice and Panariello and Waelder each notched a goal. Geneseo made it a 5-3 game at the half, outscoring the Red Dragons, 3-1, in the second quarter. Pratt, Bucci and Griffin scored for the Knights, and Panariello netted his second of the game for Cortland.

Pratt then totaled three goals and three assists in the third quarter alone as Geneseo sent the game to the fourth quarter tied at 9-9. After Cortland went ahead, 8-5, at the 8:50 mark on Haggerty's third goal, the Knights closed the quarter with four of the final five goals, two in the last 15 seconds.

Moreno gave Cortland back the lead for good just 47 seconds into the fourth quarter. Riley made it an 11-9 game at 11:29, and Haggerty scored his fourth goal of the game at 8:57 to put the Red Dragons ahead, 12-9. Morris capped Cortland's four-goal run at 3:09 before Bucci scored with 24 seconds remaining for the 13-10 final.
