ONEONTA, N.Y. – Cortland senior
Terrence Haggerty (Centerport/Harborfields) tallied two goals and two assists to become the 27th player in program history to reach 100 career goals as the Red Dragons defeated Oneonta, 17-5, in SUNYAC action Saturday afternoon.
With his pair of goals, Haggerty, who has exactly 100 in his career, also is just the fourth Red Dragon in program history to score 100 goals in a two-season span, joining Rich Felser (1966 and 1967), Ryan Heath (2007 and 2008) and Billy Fuchs (2007 and 2008).
Senior
Dean Riley (Homer) led Cortland (9-4, 4-0 SUNYAC) with a career-high six goals. Junior
Corey McMahon (Lindenhurst/St. John the Baptist) matched his career high with three goals. Senior
Joey Panariello (Islip) and freshman
Dante Yacavone (Homer) each recorded two goals and one assist, while senior
Alex Waelder (Syracuse/Corcoran) and freshman
Troy Morris (Long Beach) netted one goal apiece. Sophomores
Brandon Stiles (Mastic/Eastport-South Manor),
Steven Veteri (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown),
Tristan Hogan (Westhampton Beach) and
Brandon Croteau (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) collected one assist apiece.

Marc Esposito (West Babylon) registered 11 saves in three quarters for the visiting Red Dragons before giving way to junior
Jon Vargas (West Islip), who stopped one shot and did not allow a goal in the fourth quarter. Junior
Brian Williams (Holtsville/Sachem East) won 22-of-23 faceoffs and scooped up a career-high 20 ground balls.
Andrew Stamatel scored four goals for Oneonta (6-8, 1-3 SUNYAC). Thomas Moore recorded one goal and one assist, and Stephen Panno and Pete McCormack each chipped in with an assist. Goalie Zachary Flynn stopped 18 shots in 53:44, and Jordan Berson made two saves and did not allow a goal in 6:16.
Cortland opened up a 4-1 lead after the first quarter as Riley scored twice. Back-to-back man-up goals to start the second quarter made it a 6-1 game before Oneonta netted a pair of goals to pull to within 6-3 at the 7:07 mark. The visiting Red Dragons closed the half with five consecutive goals to take an 11-3 lead at the break. Haggerty netted his 100th goal, his team-high 46th of the season, four minutes before intermission.
The advantage grew to 14-3 early in the third quarter as Riley tallied two more goals. Stamatel then wrapped a pair of goals around a Yacavone score, and Cortland took a 15-5 lead into the last 15 minutes of play. Riley opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with a man-up goal, his six tally of the game, and Waelder completed the scoring at 10:32 for the 17-5 final.
Cortland won 24-of-25 faceoffs in the game and held a commanding 53-26 advantage in shots and a 40-15 advantage in ground balls.
