Cortland Bats on Fire in Sweep at Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Cortland's offense exploded for a combined 22 runs on 31 hits as the Red Dragons swept host Plattsburgh, 11-3 and 11-1, in a SUNYAC doubleheader. The first game was called after six innings due to the eight-run rule.

Cortland (21-12, 13-3 SUNYAC) reached the 20-win mark for the 23rd consecutive season. The Red Dragons are currently first in the SUNYAC with 26 points, with Geneseo (11-3) and Oswego (11-5) each at 22 points. Cortland will host Alfred University in a non-league doubleheader Wednesday at 3 p.m. and will close the SUNYAC regular season at home versus Oswego Saturday at noon. Cortland is guaranteed to be no worse than the fourth seed in the six-team SUNYAC postseason tournament.

Cortland 11, Plattsburgh 3 (6 inn.)

Cortland jumped out to a 9-0 lead after three innings with three runs in the first, one in the second and five in the third. Plattsburgh briefly staved off the eight-run rule with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, but Cortland scored twice in the top of the sixth and held the Cardinals scoreless in the bottom of the inning.

Alyssa Finno (Kingston) finished 2-for-2 with a double, walk and two RBI, Kelly O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) was 2-for-3 with a double, hit by pitch and RBI and Sabrina Caputo (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Tori Scharff (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) was 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs and Hannah Feldman (Buffalo/Sweet Home) reached three times on a hit and two walks.

Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) went all six innings for Cortland and gave up seven hits and no walks with six strikeouts. She allowed two earned runs.

Kaitlyn Preiss and Jennifer Groat each were 2-for-3 for the Cardinals. Groat started in the circle and allowed seven runs, five earned, in two and a third innings. Elliana Bowlen gave up four runs, one earned, over three and two thirds innings.

Feldman singled in a run and Finno hit a two-run double in the first. Jess Miller (Campbell Hall/Goshen) drove in a run with a sac fly and O'Gorman singled in a run during the five-run third. Jess Marsh (Wynantskill/Troy) had a sac fly and Hannah Thornhill (Heuvelton) added an RBI single in the sixth. Cortland finished with 12 hits and four walks.

Plattsburgh's runs in the fourth resulted from an error and RBI singles by Frannie Merkel and Alex McKearin. Van Dorn got out of a first-and-third jam later in that inning and a second-and-third situation in the fifth.

The top five batters in the order for Cortland were a combined 14-for-19 with 10 RBI and six runs scored as part of the Red Dragons' 19-hit attack. O'Gorman was 4-for-4 with a triple, double, sac bunt, three RBI and three runs scored, Taylor Felicello (Marlboro) finished 3-for-4 with a double, sac fly, three RBI and two runs and Feldman finished 2-for-4 with a double, walk and two RBI. Skyler Hoyt (Endicott/Union-Endicott) ended 3-for-4 with an RBI and Scharff was 2-for-3 with a sac fly.

Cady Walts (Cortland) pitched six innings and allowed only one run despite allowing six hits and five walks. She struck out four batters. Plattsburgh scored in the fourth on an Emily Nagle RBI single but eventually left the bases loaded, and Walts pitched out of another bases-loaded jam in the sixth without allowing any runs. Courtney Kane (Bellport) hit the first batter she faced in the seventh but got a fielder's choice force out and a double play grounder to end the game.

Haleigh Agans was 2-for-2 with a walk, Preiss was 1-for-2 with two walks and McKearin finished 1-for-2 with a walk for Plattsburgh (11-15, 5-7 SUNYAC). Starting pitcher Hannah Fuerst gave up seven runs, five earned, on 13 hits and four walks in five and two thirds innings.

Cortland led 4-0 after three innings. Feldman singled in a run in the first, and O'Gorman's RBI single and Felicello's RBI double provided two runs in the second. A Scharff sac fly plated the run in the third. The Red Dragons put the game away with three runs in the sixth, including a Felicello sac fly and Hoyt RBI single, and four in the seventh, led by O'Gorman's two-run triple, a Felicello RBI single and a Feldman RBI double.
