Caputo's First Career Homer Helps Cortland Split Non-League Doubleheader vs. Alfred

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sabrina Caputo (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) hit her first career homer and Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) threw a five-hit shutout with six strikeouts and no walks as Cortland defeated visiting Alfred, 3-0, in the opening game of a non-league doubleheader. Alfred won the second game, 4-0, behind a Jessica Wilcox two-hitter in a game that featured Cortland registering a bizarre triple play – its first in 19 years.

Cortland (22-13) will host Oswego Saturday at noon to wrap up its SUNYAC regular-season schedule. The Red Dragons (13-3 SUNYAC) are currently in first place in the league – followed by Geneseo (11-3), Oswego (11-5) and New Paltz (9-5) – and are guaranteed at least fourth place in the final standings. The top six teams qualify for the SUNYAC postseason tournament.

Cortland 3, Alfred 0

Van Dorn upped her record to 10-7 with the win and did not walk a batter for the third straight game. Alfred starter Moreta Dyke allowed three hits and two runs with one walk in two innings and Jillian Murray gave up one run on four hits in four innings with three walks.

Cortland scored twice in the second when Tori Scharff (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) led off with a single and Caputo hit a one-out, two-run homer to left. Kelly O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) singled to lead off the third and eventually scored on a Scharff RBI single to left.

Alfred threatened in the second on Alyssa Guitron's one-out double, but a groundout and flyout ended the inning, and the Saxons stranded a runner on third with one out in the fifth. The Saxons got the potential tying run to the plate in the seventh on Allison O'Toole's one-out single, a passed ball, and an Ashley Lugo two-out single. Van Dorn induced a grounder to short to end the game and preserve the shutout.

Caputo and Scharff each finished 2-for-3 and Hannah Feldman (Buffalo/Sweet Home) reached base in all three of her plate appearances with a hit and two walks. Lugo was 2-for-3 for the Saxons.

Alfred 4, Cortland 0

Wilcox earned the complete-game win in the circle for Alfred (19-17) to improve to 14-7 on the spring. She gave up two hits and three walks and struck out four. Her teammates staked her to an early lead with a run in each of the first two innings. Sydney Saucedo and Guitron led off the game with singles, Murray bunted the runners up a base, and Elena Ceja drove in a run with a squeeze bunt as Saucedo beat the throw home. Alana Eaton singled with one out in the second and eventually scored on a Guitron single up the middle.

Cortland loaded the bases in the third on a Victoria Brown (Queens/Archbishop Molloy) walk, a two-out Taylor Felicello (Marlboro) single and a Feldman walk, but Wilcox registered a strikeout to end the inning.

Alfred's attempt to increase its lead in the top of the fifth ended with Cortland recording its strange triple play. With runners on second and third and no outs, Eaton hit a fly ball to center that was caught by O'Gorman. It appeared to be a sac fly as the runner on third scored and the runner on second tagged and went to third. However, both runners were called out on appeal for leaving their bases too early and the inning was over with Alfred still up 2-0. It was the first triple play by the Red Dragons since shortstop Andrea Noyes, first baseman Jessica Richford and second baseman Megan Cross combined for a game-ending triple play at home versus Utica/Rome (now SUNY Poly) on April 15, 2000.

The Saxons were able to increase their lead to 4-0 in the top of the seventh with the help of two walks, an error on a sac bunt and a Lugo RBI single.

Guitron was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Lugo finished 2-for-3 with a walk and RBI for Alfred. Felicello went 2-for-3 to account for both of Cortland's hits. Cady Walts (Cortland) allowed two runs on five hits in two innings. Courtney Kane (Bellport) gave up two runs, one earned, over four and a third innings with four hits and four walks, and Lindsey Richards (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) retired both batters she faced. Each Cortland pitcher notched one strikeout.
