Walts No-Hitter Wraps Sweep vs. Oswego to Give Cortland SUNYAC Regular-Season Title

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cady Walts (Cortland) threw a no-hitter as Cortland defeated visiting Oswego, 8-0 in five innings, to complete a sweep of the Lakers and clinch the SUNYAC regular-season title. The Red Dragons won the opening game, 11-3 in six innings. Sabrina Caputo (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI and Hannah Feldman (Buffalo/Sweet Home) was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI in the opener, and Feldman and Victoria Brown (Queens/Archbishop Molloy) each homered in the nightcap.

Cortland (24-13, 15-3 SUNYAC) finished first in the league standings, a game ahead of second-place Geneseo, and will host the six-team, double-elimination SUNYAC tournament starting Thursday. Cortland will face sixth-seeded Fredonia at 9 a.m., followed by Geneseo versus fifth-seeded Oswego (17-19, 11-7 SUNYAC) at 11 a.m. and third-seeded New Paltz against fourth-seeded Oneonta at 1 p.m. The final game Thursday will feature the losers of the first two games.

Cortland 11, Oswego 3 (6 inn.)

Oswego jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on an Emily Knowlden RBI groundout and a solo homer by starting pitcher Angela Frampton. Knowlden and Frampton each finished 2-for-3. Cortland tied the game in the bottom of the first on a Caputo two-out, two run single through the left side.

The Red Dragons grabbed a 3-2 lead in the second as Feldman drove home a run on an infield single, but the Lakers tied the game in the top of the third on a two-base error, a Knowlden single and a Frampton RBI single.

Feldman's RBI double in the fourth gave Cortland the lead for good. The Red Dragons added two in the fifth on Caputo's leadoff homer and a Kelly O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) two-out RBI triple, and Cortland ended the game via the eight-run rule with a five-run sixth inning that featured a Jess Marsh (Wynantskill/Troy) bases-loaded walk, a Kiley Besko (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) two-run single, a Taylor Felicello (Marlboro) bases-loaded walk and an Alyssa Finno (Kingston) walk-off RBI single.

Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) allowed three runs, two earned, over six innings for the win. She gave up six hits, struck out five and walked one. In addition to Feldman's and Caputo's three-hit games, Besko went 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs and Felicello was 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI. Frampton allowed five runs, three earned, for the Lakers over four-plus innings.

Cortland 8, Oswego 0 (5 inn.)

Walts, who has had two no-hit bids this season end in the seventh inning, finally put herself in the Cortland record book after striking out eight batters over five innings. The game was called after the top of the fifth due to the eight-run rule, which Cortland forced by scoring three times in the bottom of the fourth.

Walts faced the minimum 15 batters in her no-hit effort. Erin Sweeney walked to start the game, but she was thrown out stealing by Brown. Taylor DuBois reached on a dropped pop-up in the infield to lead off the third, but she was erased two batters later on a lineout double play to Felicello at shortstop. Oswego's best chance at a hit came to start the fifth when Frampton hit a short flare and second baseman Tori Scharff (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) raced in and made a diving catch.

Feldman's solo homer in the first – her ninth of the season – gave Cortland the lead. Brown led off the third with a homer, and three more runs scored later in the inning on an O'Gorman RBI double and RBI singles by Skyler Hoyt (Endicott/Union-Endicott) and Finno. Cortland scored three times in the fourth without the benefit of a hit, with two of the runs scoring on a play that featured three Oswego errors and the third run driven in on a Felicello sac fly.

Prior to the first game, Cortland's 25th-year head coach Julie Lenhart, who is retiring after this season, was honored by the Cortland Athletic Department and was also recognized by Oswego head coach Abby Martin, a former player and assistant coach for the Red Dragons. Following the second game, Cortland recognized its five seniors – Feldman, Van Dorn, Hoyt, Marsh and Averee May (Highland Falls/James I. O'Neill).
