Red Dragons Knock off Cardinals, 15-6, with Balanced Scoring

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Eight different players scored goals as the Cortland men's lacrosse team earned a 15-6 win at Plattsburgh Saturday afternoon in SUNYAC play. The Red Dragons raised their overall record to 7-4 and their conference mark to 2-0. The Cardinals fell to 4-6 and 1-1.

Senior Terrence Haggerty (Centerport/Harborfields) led Cortland with four goals and one assist and has eclipsed 50 points for the season with 40 goals and 13 assists. Senior Dean Riley (Homer) tallied two goals and two assists, and senior Joey Panariello (Islip), junior Tristan Moreno (Clarkstown/Clarkstown North) and freshmenTroy Morris (Long Beach) and Kyle Boden (Wading River/Shoreham-Wading River) also netted two goals. The goals for Boden were the first of his career.

Junior Michael Dignan (North Kingstown, RI/La Salle Academy) added a goal. Freshmen Justin Wainwright (Homer) and Dante Yacavone (Homer) recorded two assists, and juniors Brian Williams (Holtsville/Sachem East) and Danny Caroussos (Smithtown/Smithtown West) chipped in with one assist apiece.

Freshman goalie Marc Esposito (West Babylon) made 14 saves and collected four ground balls in his first career start for the Red Dragons. Williams won 16-of-23 faceoffs and scooped up 10 ground balls, while Morris and senior Mike Mcnaney (Marcellus) each secured three ground balls.

Kevin Murphy recorded a goal and an assist for Plattsburgh. Kevin Litchauer, Jake Carroll, R.J. Ehli, Kyle Smith and James Sherwood each scored a goal, and Dilon Smith contributed an assist.

Jack Hayes started in goal, making two saves in 4:52. Joe Falco turned aside 10 shots in 55:08. Kyle Smith caused three turnovers and recorded a game-high 12 ground balls, and Justin Wise and Nick Della Ratta collected five ground balls apiece.

The Cardinals grabbed a 2-0 lead early before Cortland closed the first quarter with four straight goals from four different players. The run grew to six goals in a row as Morris and Riley opened the second quarter with goals to make it a 6-2 game. After Litchauer stemmed the Cortland momentum with his goal at the 10:08 mark, the Red Dragons put up three more goals, two from Panariello, for a 9-3 lead. Carroll's man-up goal at 4:43 made it a 9-4 score at the half.

In the third quarter, Boden and Moreno sandwiched goals around Sherwood's score, and Cortland took an 11-5 lead into the final 15 minutes. The Red Dragons took control of the game by opening the fourth quarter with four consecutive goals, three coming from Haggerty, for a 15-5 advantage with 6:54 to play. Ehli's goal at 5:53 wrapped up the scoring for the 15-6 final.
