CORTLAND, N.Y. –
Alyssa Finno (Kingston) hit a bases-loaded two-run single in the bottom of the seventh to lift Cortland past Oneonta, 5-4, to complete a sweep of a SUNYAC softball doubleheader. Cortland won the first game, 4-2, behind a complete game from
Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) and a solo homer by
Cailey Cuttita (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa).
Cortland (11-8, 4-0 SUNYAC) will host New Paltz in a doubleheader Sunday at noon.
Cortland 4, Oneonta 2
Van Dorn scattered eight hits and needed only 62 pitches over seven innings for the win. She struck out three and walked one.
Skyler Hoyt (Endicott/Union-Endicott) was 3-for-3,
Kelly O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and
Taylor Felicello (Marlboro) was 1-for-3 with a walk. Seven different Cortland players registered at least one hit.
For Oneonta, Dana Del Genio finished 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored and Selena Ruiz was 2-for-3. Megan Palmatier ended 1-for-2 with a walk. Alyssa Bluethgen gave up four runs on 10 hits over six innings with one walk.
Cortland overcame two one-run deficits in the game. Oneonta scored in the top of the first on singles by Del Genio and Ruiz, a groundout, and a Lauren Sabatino sac fly. Cortland tied it in the second on singles by Hoyt and O'Gorman and a Finno RBI groundout.
Oneonta went up 2-1 in the third as Del Genio's leadoff double, a Ruiz sac bunt and a Caroline Koch sac fly. Cortland plated two runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 3-2. Felicello walked with one out, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a
Hannah Feldman (Buffalo/Sweet Home) RBI single. Hoyt followed with a single and pinch runner
Megan Weber (Lockport/Starpoint) scored on O'Gorman's single through the right side.
Cuttita added an insurance run with a one-out solo homer in the bottom of the sixth. Oneonta had at least one hit in each inning but stranded runners in scoring position in the first, fourth and seventh innings.
Cortland 5, Oneonta 4
Oneonta went up 4-3 on a Sabatino three-run homer in the top of the sixth. Cortland loaded the bases with three walks against Oneonta starter Madison Capozucca in the top of the sixth, but Bluethgen entered and struck out the next batter to end the inning.
Courtney Kane (Bellport) relieved Cortland starter
Cady Walts (Cortland) in the top of the seventh and struck out the side in order to keep the deficit at one, and she earned the win after Cortland's rally in the bottom of the inning. Feldman started the winning rally with a one-out single up the middle and O'Gorman beat out a grounder to short to put runners on first and second.
Tori Scharff (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) reached on an error to load the bases and Finno singled through the right side to drive in Hoyt and O'Gorman with the tying and winning runs.
Oneonta (6-12-1, 1-3 SUNYAC) went up 1-0 in the third on a Megan Palmatier one-out walk and Del Genio two-out RBI double to left center. Cortland scored three times in the bottom of the third with the benefit of only one hit. With two outs
Kiley Besko (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) was hit by a pitch and stole second, Feldman was hit by a pitch, a wild pitch moved Besko and pinch runner Weber to second and third, and Hoyt walked to load the bases. Another wild pitch allowed Besko to score and O'Gorman followed with a two-run single through the right side.
Finno finished 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI, Hoyt was 2-for-3 with a double, walk and two runs scored, and O'Gorman went 2-for-4 with two RBI to account for all seven of Cortland's runs. Walts, in a no decision, allowed five hits and a walk and struck out four in six innings.
Del Genio and Sabatino each went 2-for-3 and Ruiz finished 1-for-3 to produce all five of Oneonta's hits. Capozucca, also taking a no decision, allowed four hits and five walks and fanned four in five and two thirds innings.
