GENEVA, OHIO – Junior Wendell Brand (Sleepy Hollow) finished 12th in the long jump and junior Zach Kashmer (Chili/Churchville-Chili) is in 15th place in the decathlon after the opening day of competition at the NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The three-day event is being held at the SPIRE Institute, which was also the site of the 2017 championship meet.

Brand placed 12th out of 20 competitors in the long jump with a distance of 7.10 meters (23' 3.5"), which he achieved on the third of his three attempts. He missed advancing to the nine-competitor finals by just two inches. Brand was seeded 12th entering the competition.

Kashmer, who also entered nationals seeded 12th, currently has a score of 3,318 points through five events. He started off strong with 836 points in the 100-meter dash with a career-best time of 11.11 seconds, the seventh-best effort in the 20-athlete field. He scored 613 points in the long jump at 6.12 meters (20' 1") and 427 points in the shot put at 9.02 meters (29' 7.25"), followed by 687 points in the high jump with a height of 1.87 meters (6' 1.5") – tied for seventh in the field.

Kashmer wrapped up Day 1 with a time of 51.32 seconds in the 400-meter dash – the eighth-best time in the field – for 755 points. The decathlon concludes Friday with the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin throw and 1,500-meter run.

Senior Storm Malone (Highland) will be Cortland's other competitor Friday as he participates in the 110-meter hurdles preliminaries at 2:30 p.m. Four other Red Dragons – triple jumpers Micah Assibey-Bonsu (Central Islip) and C.J.
