Cortland Edges Smith, 2-1, to Capture Caryl Newhof Classic

NORTHAMPTON, MA. – The Cortland field hockey team scored a pair of second quarter goals to erase a 1-0 deficit and held on for a 2-1 victory over Smith College Sunday afternoon to capture its third consecutive Caryl Newhof Classic title. The Red Dragons improved to 2-0 with the win. The host Pioneers fell to 1-1.

Junior Allie Bianchi (Richmond, VT/Mount Mansfield Union) and sophomore Annie Kase (Rochester/Brighton) each connected for a goal for Cortland. Senior goalie Marisa D'Amico (Smithtown/Smithtown West) made a career-high 13 saves.

Anna Ballou scored for Smith, while goalie Channy Cornell registered nine saves.

The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead just 2:58 into the game on Ballou's unassisted goal. Kase tied the score 1:22 into the second quarter, and Bianchi tallied the game winner 3:40 before halftime. It was the second goal of the season for both Kase and Bianchi. Smith pressured Cortland in the third quarter, putting six shots on the cage, but D'Amico was equal to the task and turned away each one. The Red Dragons then carried much of the fourth-quarter action, outshooting the Pioneers, 4-1, and held on for the 2-1 win.

Senior Molly Quinlan (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) was named MVP of the tournament, and D'Amico and senior Hannah Burchell (Whitney Point) each earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
