ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Senior
Amanda D'Amico (Smithtown/Smithtown West) scored her first goal of the season 5:01 into overtime as the Cortland field hockey team earned a back-and-forth 4-3 victory at nationally 14th-ranked Rochester on Tuesday night. The Red Dragons improved to 3-1 with the win, while the Yellowjackets dropped to 2-2.
Four different Cortland players tallied goals in the game. Seniors
Amanda Glaser (Melville/Walt Whitman),
Molly Quinlan (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) and
Sara Reardon (Little Falls) joined D'Amico in the scoring column. Senior
Hannah Burchell (Whitney Point) recorded two assists, and junior
Allie Bianchi (Richmond, VT/Mount Mansfield Union) chipped in with an assist. Senior goalie
Marisa D'Amico (Smithtown/Smithtown West) made 10 saves.
Colleen Maillie led Rochester with one goal and one assist. Leona Fisher and Amanda Strenk each scored a goal, and Julia McDonough registered an assist. Goalie Kate Kujawa turned aside three shots.
Glaser got the seesaw battle started with a shot from seven yards out 6:34 into the second quarter assisted by Bianchi. Maillie tied the game less than three minutes later on a goal from the right of the circle off an assist from McDonough.
After a scoreless third quarter, action picked up in the final 15 minutes of regulation. Quinlan put Cortland ahead just 37 seconds into the quarter, tapping in a pass from the top of the circle from Burchell after a penalty corner. Fisher pulled the Yellowjackets even again at the 53:53 mark with a mid-air deflection off a long pass from Maillie.
The tie game was short-lived as Reardon gave the Red Dragons back the lead at 3-2 just 1:19 later on a high bouncing shot into the top of the cage. Rochester wasted little time in scoring the equalizer when Strenk sent a low shot inside the right post 19 seconds later to send the game into overtime.
Cortland controlled much of the play in the extra session, outshooting the Yellowjackets, 5-1. D'Amico's game-winning goal came 5:01 into overtime when she tapped in a rebound after Kujawa made a sprawling helmet save on Burchell's one timer off a cross from freshman
Lily Fox (Northport) as Cortland came away with the victory.
