SWARTHMORE, PA. – The Cortland women's volleyball team captured the title at the Swarthmore Invitational with a 4-0 record after registering wins over the host school and Arcadia University on Saturday.
Cortland (10-3), which extended its winning streak to seven matches, defeated Swarthmore, 25-23, 26-24, 25-23, and Arcadia, 25-21, 18-25, 25-16, 25-21, to finish perfect at the five-team tournament. The Red Dragons began the tournament with a four-set win over Rowan and a sweep of Redlands.
Hannah Southcott (Princeton, WV) led Cortland in the Swarthmore match with 13 kills, 25 digs and three aces.
Nadia Moore (Durham, NC/Durham School of the Arts) added seven kills and
Camryn Anderson (Bronx/Cardinal Spellman) led the team with five blocks.
Carly Haegele (Commack) ended with 19 digs and two aces.
Malley Bowen (Tioga/Tioga Central) and
Gabby Amelio (Pine Bush) registered 17 and 16 assists, respectively.
Isabelle Andrews had eight kills and Sierra Tyson dished out 25 assists for Swarthmore (6-4).
Cortland held a slight lead most of the first set. Down 24-21, Swarthmore scored twice on kills by Tyson and Andrews, but a service error gave the Red Dragons the win. Cortland was down 14-6 in the second set but clawed back and tied the set at 17 on a
Nicole Van Pelt (Montgomery/Valley Central) kill. Swarthmore re-established control at 24-20, but Cortland shocked the Garnet with six straight points to take the set. Southcott started the comeback with a kill, followed by a Swarthmore error, kills by Moore and Southcott, a Southcott ace, and a Moore set-ending kill. In a tight third set, Cortland led 24-21 on a Haegele ace. Swarthmore scored twice to pull with a point, but
Cat Mangogna's (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) put down a kill to end the match.
Southcott and Moore paced Cortland in its win over Arcadia with 14 kills each and Anderson had a team-high four blocks. Haegele notched 18 digs, followed by Southcott with 11. Moore added three blocks. Shannon Ryan led Arcadia (4-5) with 14 kills and Maddie Sehrt had 12 kills.
Cortland took control in the first set with a 5-0 run to take a 15-10 lead and led by at least three the rest of the set. Arcadia pulled away late to win the second set. Cortland jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the third and was never seriously threatened, and the Red Dragons opened with a 9-1 lead in the fourth. Arcadia drew to within 9-7 but never got any closer.
Cortland opens SUNYAC play on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Oswego. The SUNYAC has changed its league format this fall to individual dual matches between each conference school instead of "pool play" situations.
