GENEVA, N.Y. – The William Smith field hockey team netted goals in the second and third quarters and defeated Cortland, 2-0, in non-conference action Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons dropped to 5-2 with the loss, while the Herons improved to 2-4.
Senior goalie
Marisa D'Amico (Smithtown/Smithtown West) registered a career-high 16 saves for Cortland. Goalie Stephanie Stone made four saves for William Smith to post her first win of the season. Molly Dutton and Sophie Craig each scored a goal for the Herons with Mackenzie Wodka picking up a pair of assists.
D'Amico kept the Red Dragons in the game in the opening quarter, turning aside seven shots. The Herons eventually broke through 7:18 into the second quarter on Dutton's goal in front. Craig pushed the lead to 2-0 just past the midway point of the third quarter converting a pass from Wodka in front.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Red Dragons had a three-shot flurry, but attempts by seniors
Hannah Burchell (Whitney Point),
Molly Quinlan (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) and
Amanda Glaser (Melville/Walt Whitman) all went wide. Cortland's final chance to cut into its deficit came off sophomore Devin DiVello's (New Hyde Park) stick at the 52:39 mark, but Stone made the save.
