Cortland Wins Match Up of Red Dragons, 2-1, in OT

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Hannah Burchell (Whitney Point) scored two minutes, 10 seconds into overtime to lead the Cortland field hockey team to a 2-1 victory versus Oneonta in the SUNYAC opener for both schools. The home Red Dragons improved to 6-2 overall, while the visiting Red Dragons fell to 3-5.

Senior Sara Reardon (Little Falls) also tallied a goal for Cortland. Senior goalie Marisa D'Amico (Smithtown/Smithtown West) registered 11 saves.

Junior Chloe Lynch (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) scored for Oneonta with senior Alise Anson (Stone Ridge/Rondout Valley) assisting on the goal. Sophomore goalie Kristy Campana (Melville/Walt Whitman) turned aside eight shots, while sophomore Emily Raymond (Deposit) recorded a defensive save.

Reardon wasted little time in putting Cortland ahead, notching her third goal of the season just 59 seconds into the game when she knocked in a shot after Raymond's defensive stop. Lynch tied the score 4:51 into the second quarter. After D'Amico made a save off a penalty-corner play, Anson sent the rebound to the far right post where Lynch tapped it in for her second goal of the season.

The host Red Dragons were forced to play a player down for a 10-minute stretch spanning late in the second quarter to nearly 10 minutes into the third quarter with back-to-back yellow cards but were able to keep the game knotted at 1-1. Cortland then had five minutes of play with Oneonta a player down from late in the third quarter into the fourth quarter, but the visiting Red Dragons held Cortland off the scoreboard.

Each team created an excellent chance to break the tie in the waning minutes of regulation. D'Amico made a pad save on freshman Ally McCrudden, who broke in all alone on the left side, with 2:49 remaining, and freshman Lily Fox (Northport) missed just wide right for Cortland on a breakaway with 1:27 on the clock.

Burchell scored the game winner after a flurry of shots in front. Senior Amanda Glaser (Melville/Walt Whitman) fired a shot in front that Campana denied. Fox put the rebound on goal before Burchell handled that rebound with a shot inside the left post to give the host Red Dragons the win.
