WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senior
Gabby Amelio (Pine Bush) became the 10th player in Cortland volleyball history to reach the career 2,000-assist mark as the Red Dragons completed play at the Gallaudet University Worthington Classic.
Cortland (17-6) finished 2-2 at the tournament and ended in fourth place. The Red Dragons completed a 2-1 pool-play record with a three-set win over Penn St. Abington (25-17, 25-14, 25-10) before losing in four sets to York College of Pennsylvania in the third-place match. York a tight match by scores of 25-22, 29-27, 27-29, 25-12 to avenge a four-set loss to the Red Dragons at Misericordia last weekend.
Amelio totaled 23 assists in the win over Penn St. Abington and had 25 assists, three aces and 17 digs versus York. In the process she increased her career assist total at Cortland to 2,033. In her third season with the Red Dragons after transferring from Towson State, Amelio had 849 assists in 2017 and 852 assists last fall, and currently has 332 this season.
Hannah Southcott (Princeton, WV) was named to the all-tournament team. She finished with 15 kills with four errors in 27 attempts versus Abington for a .407 attack percentage and has 14 kills, 13 digs and four aces against York.
Nadia Moore (Durham, NC/Durham School of the Arts) had 10 kills and three blocks against Abington and
Gabby Fernandes (Islip) totaled 11 digs.
Olivia Doorley (Pearl River) shared the team lead with Southcott versus York with 14 kills and also added 13 digs.
Bridgette Moran (Massapequa Park/St. John the Baptist) led Cortland with six blocks in the York match.
Malley Bowen (Tioga/Tioga Central) finished with 18 assists and
Carly Haegele (Commack) had a team-high 23 digs.
Katharine Costello led Penn St. Abington (6-13) with 10 kills. Madyson Whitcomb totaled 17 kills and Abby Diehl had 43 assists for York (11-9).
Christopher Newport won the tournament with a four-set win over Marymount in the championship match to complete a 4-0 weekend.
Cortland's next eight matches will be SUNYAC contests, starting with home matches versus Oneonta on Friday, Oct. 4, at 6 p.m. and versus New Paltz on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 1 p.m.
