Red Dragons Tie for Second at UR Invite After Wins vs. Utica and Nazareth

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Cortland women's volleyball team finished in a tie for second place out of 11 teams at the University of Rochester Invitational after posting a three-set victory versus Utica and a five-set win over Nazareth during Saturday's action.

Cortland (5-3 overall) finished 3-1 at the tournament along with RIT and St. John Fisher. Rochester was the tournament champion with a 4-0 mark. The Yellowjackets beat Cortland in five sets Friday.

Sophomore Hannah Southcott (Princeton, WV) and senior Nadia Moore (Durham, NC/Durham School of the Arts) both earned spots on the all-tournament team. Southcott finished the weekend with a combined 47 kills, a .281 attack percentage, 47 digs and eight aces. Moore had 46 kills, a .241 attack percentage, 23 digs and four blocks.

Cortland began Saturday with a 25-11, 25-10, 25-18 win over Utica College. Moore led the way with 12 kills and only two errors in 19 attempts for a .526 attack percentage. Maya Owens (Nyack) had 10 kills with one error in 20 swings for a .450 percentage and Southcott was errorless on 19 attacks with nine kills for a .474 hitting percentage. Megan McMahon (Ballston Spa) and Gabby Amelio (Pine Bush) amassed 21 and 14 assists, respectively. Carly Haegele (Commack) finished with four aces and six digs and Nicole Van Pelt (Montgomery/Valley Central) added five kills and three blocks.

Meaghan Romaguera led Utica with six kills and Eleanor Cepiel had seven digs.

The Red Dragons won a back-and-forth affair with Nazareth with set scores of 25-12, 21-25, 25-16, 20-25 and 15-7. Moore knocked down a match-high 17 kills with two errors in 50 attempts (.300) and Southcott recorded 15 kills with three errors in 49 attempts (.245) along with 19 digs. They each had three kills during the fifth set.

Bridgette Moran (Massapequa Park/St. John the Baptist) finished with eight kills and a .333 attack percentage, and her five blocks shared the team lead with Camryn Anderson (Bronx/Cardinal Spellman). Haegele totaled a team-best 23 digs and Olivia Doorley (Pearl River) served three aces. McMahon (18), Amelio (17) and Haegele (10) each had double-figure assists.

Melissa Newcomb paced Nazareth with 15 kills and a .355 attack percentage. Paiton Basinski had 13 kills, McKenzie Hart totaled 32 digs and Jessica Barry dished out 41 assists.

Cortland led 8-1 to start the first set and cruised to the win. The second set was tied at 19 before the Golden Flyers scored four straight points to take control. The Red Dragons' lead in the third was just 16-14 before a 6-0 run pushed the lead to eight. Cortland cut a 19-14 deficit to 20-19 in the fourth and was down 21-20 before Naz tallied the final four points. The Red Dragons pushed a 5-4 lead in the fourth to 8-4 on a kill by Moore and two by Southcott, then put the set and match away with a 4-0 run that extended a 10-6 lead to 14-6.

Cortland will host the University of Scranton in a non-league match Wednesday at 7 p.m.
