The 2020 SUNY Cortland C-Club Athletic Awards Ceremony, originally scheduled for May 4, was canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak. In its place, Cortland Athletics is honoring its student-athletes as part of an online "Awards Week" series of releases May 4-8.
Four Red Dragons were honored on Thursday, May 7. Men's soccer midfielder
Miguel Tunas (North Salem) won the Carl "Chugger" Davis Award and women's lacrosse midfielder
Lexie Meager (Syracuse/West Genesee) was chosen as the M. Louise Moseley Award winner. Men's soccer defender
Nevin Nambiar (New Hyde Park/Herricks) and women's swimmer
Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) were named the "Unsung Hero Award" recipients.
The Davis and Moseley Awards are given to a senior male and senior female, respectively, for strong leadership skills and athletic achievement. Davis was Cortland's head football coach from 1932 to 1962 and also coached baseball, basketball and golf. Moseley was Cortland's Director of Women's Athletics from 1966-78. A pioneer for women's athletics, she played an integral role in the start of women's intercollegiate athletics at Cortland in the late 1960s.
The Unsung Hero Awards, which began in 2018, recognize accomplishments of student-athletes who led their teams to success in ways that cannot always be measured in statistical categories and who exemplifies the characteristics of a true leader - excelling in the classroom, and demonstrating humility, work ethic and integrity at all times in both practice and competition.
Tunas played in 80 games, 77 as a starter, during his four-year Red Dragon career. He set a school record with 34 career assists and earned four All-East and All-SUNYAC honors while helping the program post a combined 60-17-6 record and make three NCAA tournament appearances.
"Miguel came in and had an all-region freshman year in a sport with a really high number of teams and players," said Cortland men's soccer head coach
Steve Axtell. "He didn't have a single downward trend and kept growing and getting better as a player and in his accolades. He became the school career assist leader, undoubtedly due to his natural disposition to service. He brought that same attitude to his leadership and was a two-year captain. Ultimately, he ended his career as one of the most decorated players in the program's history during a time period of some of the highest levels of success the program has seen."
Meager played in 60 games, 59 as a starter, and recorded 139 goals and 51 assists for 190 points along with 193 draw controls. She ranks sixth at Cortland in career draws, 18th in goals and 20th in points despite having her senior season canceled after only three games. Meager was a first-team All-American and the SUNYAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2018 and was a three-time All-Empire Region selection.
"Lexie has been such a great addition to our program," said Cortland women's lacrosse head coach
Kelly Orr. "As a freshman transfer (was at Le Moyne in the fall of 2016), from the second she joined the team she became a leader. While her storied career speaks volumes, it's her personality and work ethic that make her one of the greats. Lexie made an immediate impact as a two-way midfielder, securing draw controls, scoring goals and creating turnovers. She has truly been fun to watch grow as a player, teammate and leader."
Nambiar appeared in 73 games, 67 as a starter, over four seasons and earned three All-SUNYAC awards. He registered three goals and three assists, and the Red Dragons allowed only 69 goals during his four seasons with the program.
"Nevin has the intellect, charisma and professionalism that would have stood out at any university in the country," said Axtell. "He is built of the highest character and demands those around him to be better. He had an exemplary career and was one of our most consistent top players four years straight. As most defenders realize, their contributions go unnoticed on a large scale, but what he brought to our program was second to none during a time period in our program where standing out was extremely hard to do."
Davey won SUNYAC titles in both the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle during her senior year as well as the 100-yard freestyle in her junior season. She earned a pair of honorable mention All-America awards during her junior year with a 12th-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle and 16th-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle at the NCAA Division III Championships. She is the school record-holder in the 50-yard (23.41), 100-yard (51.19) and 200-yard (1:52.68) freestyle events along with the 100-yard backstroke (57.98).
"Kelly focused on becoming the best swimmer that she could be and was able to show tremendous growth to become the fastest swimmer in school history," said Cortland swimming and diving head coach
Brian Tobin. "As driven as she has been for her personal success, she is always there for all of her teammates. She is a role model and exceptional leader."
