SUNY Cortland Athletics recently learned of the passing of Ross Phelps, a 1943 Cortland alumnus and a 2014 C-Club Hall of Fame inductee. Phelps passed away last November at age 98.

Phelps played four years of soccer and three years of tennis at Cortland and was a captain on both teams. During his senior year he was called into military service and participated in the highly competitive Air Force cadet pilot training program. He was a top turret remote control gunner on a B-29 Bomber in the South Pacific with the Army Air Corps. After three years of service he returned to Cortland and completed his bachelor's degree work in the summer of 1946.

Phelps worked with Montgomery County BOCES from 1952 through 1963 and with Rensselaer/Columbia/Greene Counties BOCES from 1968-1981.
