CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's soccer team scored a pair of goals in each half in defeating Fredonia, 4-0, Friday afternoon in SUNYAC action at Holloway Field. The Red Dragons improved to 4-4-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference, while the Blue Devils dropped to 6-3-1 and 1-1.
Four different players scored a goal for Cortland. Sophomore
Erica Gangemi (Syracuse/Westhill) recorded a goal and an assist, and senior
Jaden Galluzzo (Commack) and juniors
Lizzy Sabatelle (Poughkeepsie/Roy C. Ketcham) and
Sabrina Rodrigues (West Hempstead) each netted a goal. Sophomore
Simone Neivel (Syracuse/C.W. Baker) collected two assists, while sophomore
Cam Stone (Ilion/Central Valley Academy) added an assist.
Junior goalie
Lexi Ramonetti (Northport) posted her second shutout in three starts for the Red Dragons, turning aside five shots. Junior goalie Sabrina Suriani (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) registered six saves for Fredonia.
Galluzzo scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the ninth minute, taking a pass from Neivel and beating Suriani with a shot to the left post from the right side of the box. The Blue Devils generated a quality chance in the 29th minute. Freshman Maddie Payne (Buffalo/Williamsville South) struck a clean shot from the top of the box that Ramonetti popped into the air and secured before the ball cleared the goal line. Sabatelle made it a 2-0 game in the 40th minute, finishing off a through ball into the right side of the box.
In the 60th minute, Rodrigues struck for her first goal of the season. Neivel crossed a pass into the box from the left side that Fredonia could not control and Rodrigues delivered the goal on the loose ball. Payne had another excellent scoring chance in the 66th minute with a one-time strike from 20 yards straight out, but Ramonetti denied the bid. Gangemi completed the scoring with 1:54 remaining, sending a 20-yard shot into the upper left for the 4-0 final.
