CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior
Lizzy Sabatelle (Poughkeepsie/Roy C. Ketcham) scored just 26 seconds into overtime to lift the Cortland women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory Saturday night in SUNYAC action at Holloway Field in a game pushed back more than six hours due to inclement weather. The Red Dragons improved to 7-4-2 overall and 5-1-1 in the conference and secured a postseason tournament playoff berth. The Lakers dropped to 5-7 and 2-5.
Junior
Sabrina Rodrigues (West Hempstead) also tallied a goal for Cortland, and graduate student
Alannah O'Shea (New Hyde Park/Herricks) picked up an assist. Junior goalie
Lexi Ramonetti (Northport) improved her record to 5-1-1 on the season with six saves.
Senior Maggie Riordan (New City/Clarkstown North) scored Oswego's goal with junior Phyllis Reed (Macedon/Wayne) collecting an assist. Sophomore goalie Haley Muehl (Syracuse/Solvay) registered eight saves.
Rodrigues gave the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead four minutes before the half, scoring on a header off a corner kick serve from O'Shea. Cortland narrowly missed taking a two-goal lead in the 52nd minute. Sophomore
Simone Neivel (Syracuse/C.W. Baker) possessed a turnover by Muehl just outside of the box but missed the open goal with a low shot that slid by the left post.
Oswego tied the game in the 81st minute. Riordan took a pass from Reed on the left side of the box and sent a shot into the upper right for her second goal of the season. Sabatelle wasted little time in netting the game winner in overtime. She ran onto a loose ball on the left side and fired a shot inside the right post to give Cortland the 2-1 victory.
