Cortland Stays Strong in SUNYAC Play with 7-2 Win vs. Oswego

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland improved to 4-1 in SUNYAC play and strengthened its positioning for a league playoff berth next spring with a 7-2 victory over visiting Oswego.

The Red Dragons (5-3, 4-1 SUNYAC) have one scheduled match remaining this fall – a non-league home match versus Houghton on Tuesday. Cortland's final two SUNYAC matches will be held early next April versus Oneonta and Geneseo, as will the SUNYAC tournament April 29-30. The top four teams in the eight-team conference earn spots in the league playoffs.

Rachel Sullivan (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) and Katie Barber (Sound Beach/Rocky Point) – Cortland's two players honored on Senior Day prior to the match – earned an 8-2 win at third doubles. Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois) and Isabella Bonapace (Leonia, NJ) won 8-5 at first doubles and Abby Madigan (Endicott/Union-Endicott) and Vyda Van Denburg (Kingston) teamed to win 8-2 at second doubles to give the Red Dragons a 3-0 lead entering singles play.

Cortland clinched the victory with wins in the first two completed singles matches. Van Denburg won 6-0, 6-2 at third singles and Karlie Cubino (Whitesboro) was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at fourth singles. The lead grew to 7-0 when Madigan posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory at first singles and Streety won 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) at second singles.

Oswego earned the day's final two points – a 6-4, 6-2 win by Rafaela Dimitrakopoulou at fifth singles, and a 2-6, 6-2, 12-10 win by Anabel Greenberg over Meredith Perine (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) at sixth singles, with a super tiebreaker to 10 points played in place of the third set since the team winner was already decided.
