ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Cortland women's tennis began the spring portion of its 2021-22 schedule with an 8-1 dual-match loss at Oneonta Tuesday afternoon.
Cortland's lone victory came at number two singles as
Abby Madigan (Endicott/Union-Endicott) posted a 7-5, 6-1 victory. Cortland (5-4, 4-2 SUNYAC) fell just short in two other matches. The first doubles team of
Laura Schnitzler (Kerpen, Germany) and
Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois) lost 8-5 to Madeline Carswell and Maxie Karen, and
Vyda Van Denburg (Kingston) fell 6-4, 6-3 to Rebecca Macdonald at fourth singles.
Oneonta (11-5, 3-0 SUNYAC) opened with three doubles victories. In addition to Carswell and Karen winning at number one, Olivia Fraser and Macdonald won 8-1 at number two and Sophia Schutte and Brianna Shaw won 8-1 on the third flight.
Oneonta's singles victories, in addition to Macdonald's, came from Fraser at number one, Schutte at number three, Karen's at number five and Julia Holtermann at number six, all in straight sets.
Cortland will wrap up its SUNYAC regular-season schedule at home versus Geneseo on Wednesday, April 20. Cortland's 4-2 league record to date includes a 4-1 mark last fall. The top four teams in the league standings qualify for the conference tournament April 29-30 in Binghamton. Cortland is currently in fourth place in the eight-team conference.
