Cortland Heading to SUNYAC Tournament Despite 5-4 Loss to Geneseo in League Finale

CORTLAND N.Y. – The Cortland women's tennis team lost a three-plus hour marathon match versus visiting Geneseo, 5-4, in the SUNYAC regular-season finale for both teams.

Geneseo (9-7, 5-2 SUNYAC) clinched the third seed in next weekend's four-team SUNYAC tournament. Cortland (5-5, 4-3 SUNYAC), which recently secured a playoff bid, could have moved into the third seed with a victory but instead will be the fourth seed. Cortland will face top-seeded New Paltz in the semifinals on Friday at the Binghamton Tennis Center, while Geneseo will play second-seeded Oneonta.

Cortland led 2-1 after doubles play. Abby Madigan (Endicott/Union-Endicott) and Vyda Van Denburg (Kingston) earned an 8-5 win at second doubles and Karlie Cubino (Whitesboro) and Emma Madigan (Endicott/Union-Endicott) posted an 8-4 win at third doubles. Geneseo's Natalia Krol and Rory Tobin won, 8-4 at first doubles.

Geneseo tied the score at 2-2 with a 6-1, 6-0 win by Abigail Rockwood at sixth singles and took a 3-2 lead when Grace Klomp won, 6-3, 6-0, at fourth singles. The Red Dragons knotted the score at 3-3 when (Abby) Madigan completed a 6-3, 6-3 victory at second singles.

The visiting Knights went back up, 4-3, on a 6-3, 6-3 win by Julia Paolino at fifth singles. Cortland, however, tied the team score when Laura Schnitzler (Kerpen, Germany) registered a 6-4, 6-2 decision at first singles.

The match came down to the result at third singles, which turned out to be a tooth and nail battle between Cortland's Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois) and Geneseo's Tobin. Tobin won both sets by 7-6 counts, claiming the first with an 8-6 tiebreaker and the second with a 7-4 tiebreaker.

Cortland is scheduled to travel to Misericordia University for a non-league match Wednesday before playing in this weekend's SUNYAC tournament.
