CORTLAND, N.Y. – Freshman
Keirra Ettere (Mahopac/Lakeland) scored her third goal of the game one minute, nine seconds into overtime to lift the nationally 19th-ranked Cortland field hockey team to a 3-2 victory versus St. John Fisher in non-conference action Wednesday at the Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons improved to 13-1, while the Cardinals dropped to 8-6.
With her three goals, Ettere set a program record for single-season points by a freshman at Cortland, raising her total to 52 points on 22 goals and eight assists as she eclipsed the existing mark of 47 points set by Kelli Johnson in 2003.
Freshman
Hanna Corrigan (Barneveld/Holland Patent) and junior
Lily Fox (Northport) each collected an assist for Cortland. Senior goalie
Megan McGuinness (Carle Place) registered five saves.
Graduate student Alyssa Andres (Clarence) and freshman Audrey Grieb (Webster/Webster Thomas) scored goals for St. John Fisher with freshman Molly Fisher (Webster/Webster Thomas) collecting an assist. Sophomore goalie Sophia Trozzi (Warminster, PA/William Tennent) turned aside seven shots.
Andres gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead just 3:58 into the game, knocking a shot inside the right post on a loose ball after a Cortland defender broke up an initial cross into the circle. Ettere tied the game just past the midway point of the second quarter, taking a pass from Corrigan and setting up her blast from the middle of the circle that went inside the left post.
The Red Dragons took a 2-1 lead 39 seconds into the second half. Ettere out muscled a Cardinal player for a loose ball in front and worked a shot inside the left post. Grieb knotted the game at 39:47 when she tapped in a pass from Fisher into the open goal at the left post. After a scoreless fourth quarter in which each team registered three shots, Ettere wasted little time in scoring the overtime game winner. With the teams playing seven players per side, Fox found open space on the right side and slipped a pass in front of the cage where Ettere flicked a reverse-stick shot inside the left post to secure the 3-2 Cortland victory.
