Cortland Ends Regular Season with 3-2 Win at Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The nationally 16th-ranked Cortland field hockey team earned a 3-2 back-and-forth victory at Skidmore College Saturday afternoon in non-conference action to close out the regular season. The Red Dragons improved to 15-1, while the Thoroughbreds dropped to 10-10.

Junior Lily Fox (Northport) and freshmen Hanna Corrigan (Barneveld/Holland Patent) and Jamie Snyder (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) each scored a goal for Cortland with Fox adding an assist. Senior goalie Megan McGuinness (Carle Place) made seven saves. Junior Elizabeth Pratt (Saratoga Springs) registered two defensive saves, and Corrigan and freshman Carolena Purpura (Centerport/Harborfields) each added one.

Carolyn Blackman tallied a goal and an assist for Skidmore, and Carrie Hughes also scored a goal. Goalie Jess Gaetgens registered seven saves.

Corrigan opened the scoring 53 seconds before the end of the first quarter with her 11th goal of the season assisted by Fox. Blackman tied the game at 1-1 at the 19:14 mark, scoring on a penalty stroke. The Red Dragons reclaimed the lead at the end of the first half when Fox scored her 12th goal of the season off a scramble in front.

Hughes tied the game at 37:01 when she scored directly off a penalty corner. Snyder notched the game winner with 5:15 on the clock, weaving her way through the Skidmore defense and beating Gaetgens one-on-one. The Thoroughbreds pulled Gaetgens for an extra field player with 3:53 remaining and created two quality scoring chances. Corrigan denied a bid by Hughes with 3:18 on the clock with a defensive save, and McGuinness made a save on Hughes off a penalty corner with 2:51 remaining to preserve the 3-2 victory.
